Wheres The Compassion for Mel Gibson?
LOS ANGELES- Since Mel Gibsons arrest for suspicion of drunk driving last week, liberal Jewish leaders and most of the media have condemned him for uttering anti-Jewish slurs. On two occasions Gibson has since offered apologies and asked forgiveness from the Jewish communitybut some in the media are still not satisfied. Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, Founder and President of BOND (Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny) issued a statement today calling for Gibsons detractors to have compassion for the star. Below is Rev. Petersons statement in its entirety regarding this issue:
I am sorry that Mel Gibson and his family are going through this difficult period. Gibson absolutely did the right thing by offering a heartfelt apology and asking for forgiveness from the Jewish communityhes even asked to meet with Jewish leaders. To those who will not be satisfied until Gibson is destroyedI say shame on you. Wheres your humanity?
Now there appears to be an orchestrated campaign by some Hollywood insiders and media to personally destroy Gibson. These same people opposed Gibsons blockbuster The Passion of the Christ which despite opposition from liberals was a huge hit among audiences. These smear merchants are using this incident to get back at Gibson. Its time that people accept his apology and move on.
Had this been a liberal struggling with a similar addictionthese same people would be calling for understandingso wheres the compassion for Mel Gibson? Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and Louis Farrakhan have all made anti-Jewish remarks in the past with little public condemnation. But God help you if you make a highly successful movie about Jesus Christ and then succumb to alcoholism. This is another example of selective outrage practiced by liberal hypocrites. So much for liberal compassion.
BOND (Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny) is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization whose mission is rebuilding the family by rebuilding the man. Rev. Peterson is the author of SCAM: How the Black Leadership Exploits Black America. For more information visit BOND

Well said!
The Christian-haters in Hollywood make their anti-Christian movies when they're SOBER. That means they need counseling even more than Gibson - because at least he keeps his thoughts to himself when he's not demonized by alcohol.
The folks jumping on Mel hardest are the same ones who hated him before, because he dared to make a movie about another person they apparently hate - Jesus Christ.
Well said, CB. There are far too many such people around here these days.
I think Lenin's talking about the bigots who called Gibson a hater -- and worse -- for the "crime" of making a movie about the Christian Gospels. It's dishonest and disengenuous to say that these people were merely "criticizing" a movie (as if they were talking about its artistic merits): They were slurring Mel's Movie as, in essence, a hate crime. They went after him in the most vile ways -- the bigot Foxman leading the pack.
Isn't it possible that we don't have a problem with his movie, but we do have a problem with his endangering the lives of others by driving drunk and making disgusting racist sexist comments to the police. Somehow, I have to believe that if Michael Moore was caught in the same situation, I don't think everyone here would be rushing to accept his apology...
I can't imagine Michael Moore apologizing for leftist slurs, but if he did, sincerely, then I'd accept it. HEck, I'd accept the Dixie Chicks apology - if they gave one.
I haven't read anyone on FR, or anywhere else, defending what Gibson did. There's residual affection for him, because of his wonderful movie, The Passion, and people who liked that movie probably want to give the guy who made it -- a sinner -- the chance for redemption.
Nonetheless, it wasn't the "Jews" that were criticizing the movie - as I mentioned before, most didn't care. This is my point. There were some people who criticized and even slurred his movie. Some of them happened to be Jewish. Lenin is making the equivalency between some bigots criticizing or slurring Mel's movie and Mel criticizing all Jews. I don't buy it - I don't care what gibson was thinking - there's no good justification for the actions he took or the comments he made.
Your posts remind me of a rabid hyena stuffing himself on another's kill.
I'll leave it to your imagination.
I can live with that. The nerve of me criticizing someone for what Gibson did - gee, that's tough. Sorry, I happen to have a major problem with those that endanger the lives of others by driving drunk, and those who make ugly statements to the police and trying to escape. Yeah, I guess I'm just a hardass.
What do you want him to do ? Kill himself ? Did Cindy Sheehan apologize for saying the same thing ? Did Al Sharpton apologize for Freddies ?
How about a hint? I really don't know what you're talking about...
