Is university 'journalism' education anything more than training camp for liberal cadres preparing to join MSM ranks? Take, for example, this morning's op-ed in the Seattle Times by Floyd J. McKay, a journalism professor emeritus at Western Washington University.
He spouts straight-from-the-Gore's-mouth alarmism about global warming, going so far as to propose that high school students be forced to view Al's movie. He also takes predictable swipes at the Bush administration, conservative talk show hosts, throwing in a particularly nasty swipe at Christian conservatives in the process. Excerpts below.
* "Migrations [from farm to city] in India and elsewhere in Africa and Asia cannot be sustained at today's Western standard of living. Even at one car per family, without air conditioning and supermalls, the world's environment cannot survive the onslaught."
* "I'd suggest we start by making Al Gore's slide-show movie, "An Inconvenient Truth," required viewing in every high school in the country.""\
* "All American adults should see the movie, and many will. But we are so politically polarized that we can expect 40 percent of the nation to follow the lead of President George W. Bush and the talk-show hacks and either make fun of Gore or refuse to see his work."
* "Global warming is only the most important of a number of scientific areas in which the White House has been hostile to scientific research, and has attempted to intimidate government scientists."
* "There will be sacrifices to deal with global warming, and we will need to change some habits of long-standing. But, as Gore points out, there is also the potential for entire new industries with good jobs to emerge from this change." [This was the Clinton-Gore line from 1994 - great new jobs in complying with government regulation.]
* "We must decide which scenario will determine the end of life on this planet. One, increasingly in favor among the most fundamentalist of Christians and Muslims, is apocalyptic, an end-times for the devout that condemns millions of others to indescribable tortures and agony."
* "Policies of our present administration tilt toward the apocalyptic; we will lose eight years on global warming before the Texas oil and military complex leaves office."
McKay: typical of the academics who prepare our young minds to become 'objective journalists.'
Seattle Times/NewsBusters ping to Today show list.
A lot of that migration in India and China is being driven by massive outsourcing of e-business (including IT) and the making of cheap junk. Would this guy support aggressive protectionism to take this stuff back to America? Or does he also hate America too much to do that.
What - we cannot do both?
Just where, pray tell, is this torture by Christians? God needs to be made to account. It may be people who look Christian who do occasional hideous acts, but it IS people in the name of Allah who are destabilizing the world. If a liberal is going to attack a Muslim, you can bet he will lump Christians in with them. What he won't say is why. He doesn't like extremism in any form. And the most fundamental of Christians are extreme in their moral stands against homosexuality and abortion. The difference between the extreme Muslim and the extreme Christian is that Christians don't kill. Our sword is the Word of God/Truth and THEIR sword is violence. This is intolerable and to a "Godless" (thank you Coulter) population and to them it is on par with extremists who kill innocent people on a train or in a tower.
There's entirely too much Gore in the movies today!
The "torture by Christians" that he mentions is a total misunderstanding of the the Apocolypse. Like many heathens he thinks Christians CAUSE the end-times. Whereas, most Christians hold that God does the causing, and the majority of Christians hold that the Church will be lifted out before the Apocolypse even happens.
Will someone show me where having a teaching degree in journalism means one is knowledgable in the field of climatology?
This journalism prof/clown is in a high state of agita over Gore's global warming theories.
When I was in school teachers admonished us to "put on our thinking caps," todays liberal union corrupted teachers make sure the kids have them off!
"There will be sacrifices to deal with global warming, and we will need to change some habits of long-standing."
I'm not going to worry about this until they start cancelling NASCAR races due to excessive use of fossil fuels and all the 'Global Warming' a single race can be proven to cause using the strict scientific reasearch guidelines they use to target me and my pick-up truck. :)
And then I want to see them cap the Kyoto Treaty-exempt Chinese Coal-Burning Power Plants (where they get most of their energy) with Billions & Billions of Customers Served.
*Rolleyes*
I was watching one of those movie rating / cooking shows yesterday and saw that they rated some of the new movies on a scale of 1 to 10
They rated the new "Pirates of the Caribbean" 7 out of 10
Adam Sandler's "Click" received a 6
Al Gore's "Inconvenient Truth" received a 9
I guess it must be a very watchable and enjoyable movie. Can you say OSCAR?????
"apocalyptic" ..... not unless this administration will not work hard enough against Hillary attempting to become President.
;-)
I don't know if you remember but back in the 1970s there was a proposal to cut back the length of auto races by 10% to conserve fuel which for a 500 mile race meant it would go 450 instead. I remember sports readers rolling their eyes and don't think it was ever implemented but the suggestion was out there at the time.
He doesn't say that Christians CAUSE torture and agony or that they are FOR torture and agony, just that some fundamentalist Christians believe we are close to the "end-times" and this is true. Why twist the man's words here? He has already shown himself to be a big loopybin nutjob on the enviornmental stuff.
...speaking of "indescribable tortures and agony"....
