I can't even wrap my brain around the amount of lawsuits and money connected if someone with a backhoe nicked a gas line, and caused this.

They are saying it DOESN'T APPEAR to be terrorist related and that there is NO EVIDENCE of terrorism SO FAR. It is the idiotic media like Fox News that paraphrases that into the definitive "isn't terrorism", because they are more interested in short, catchy headlines than accuracy. Not sure what is so hard to understand about the difference between "doesn't appear/no evidence yet" and "isn't".

Fire official interviewed on MSNBC says that the debris pile and other evidence strongly fit the pattern of a gas explosion. Some witnesses said they smelled gas before the explosions, other say they never did.

Well, Bloomberg did say NYC couldn't function without them.

Channel 4 reporterette is saying there were reports of gas odor in an adjoining building this morning.

No further confirmation, however.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more of the explosions at older buildings in the northeastern USA.

A lot of buildings in the northeastern USA are heated with heating oil, not natural gas.

That's what they'd like you to believe.

Buildings don't just explode from natural gas and ignition sources. This must be a government conspiracy.

Hopefully, if there was a strong smell of gas the people in the building got out quickly before the explosion.

This is apropos of nothing but the overhead shots of the firefighters stooped over in their helmets and striped suits makes them look like bees in a hive (10:05 am on FNC).

The company at fault, unless a major corporation, would probably just file bankruptcy and get it over with.

reports of gas odor in an adjoining building this morning.

We had a gas leak from some poorly done stove plumbing in my apt building on the Upper West Side once. I noticed it as soon as I walked into the lobby when I got home in the afternoon. I went around and found that it was coming from an apartment on the second floor, and I called the fire department and rang all the bells on that floor to see if there were any neighbors home. One lady answered the door and told me she had smelled gas for most of the day but she was "afraid" to call the fire department! What an idiot. The fireman told me that after these explosions (ours didn't get to explode, thank goodness!) people often say, "oh, yeah, I smelled gas, but..."

In New York City even in building heated with oil, gas is still used for cooking. I lived in Queens for many years and had oil heat, but used gas for the stove and hot water.

I doubt this was a dirty bomb, but this post made me wonder, how soon would we know an explosion was caused by one? I mean, if it happened like this, wouldn't they assume gas explosion and rush in and perhaps get contaminated?
