FReeper Canteen ~ Tell Us About Your Military Service ~ July 6, 2006
Ms. Behavin & Old Sarge | 06 JULY 2006 | Ms. Behavin & Old Sarge

Posted on 07/05/2006 7:04:50 PM PDT by Old Sarge

Army?

Navy?

Air Force?

Marines?

Coast Guard?

Why did you choose that particular branch?

Where did you go to Basic Training or Boot Camp?

What is the name of your unit? (Division?)

What is their (your) mascot?

Tell us how much you loved your DI!

How long were you at Boot Camp/Basic Training, before you questioned the parentage of the senior Drill Sergeant? How long were you in service before you realized that the instructors were right in all that they taught you?

Your first landing on an aircraft carrier

Your first parachute jump

The heaviest vehicle you got to drive

The largest weapon you got to use

Did you serve before email?

Did you have a personal nickname?

It is our pleasure and honor to be here for our Troops, past, present and future...
and especially during this Week, the 4th of July we remember that we owe our freedom to you.
Thank you for your service and sacrifice, and God bless you.

A gentle reminder from Ms.B:
Please, no politics in The Canteen.
The Troops need a place to rest, relax and relate, and that place is The Canteen.
Have fun and play nice!

STORY TIME!!!!

Two days ago, I was in Sams' shopping for stuff for The Boy's first lemonade stand.

Combing thru the aisles, I met a tall old fellow. He had a WW2 Veterans cap, and an old USAAF pin on.

We talked. He flew the B-29 in the Pacific. I told him about Iraq. He wondered how it REALLY was (guess he didn't believe what he was told). I told him.

We shook hands. He had a fine grip for his age. We parted company. We both walked a little taller.

USS Keppler being decommissioned in Ismir Turkey, 30 June, 1972.

Served 1969 - 1973, USS Morton, USS Keppler, two tours of combat duty, Vietnam.

It was tough, we were RiverMud 26 Bravo in Vietnam, doing coastal fire support. I was a radarman, E5, in CIC (the Combat Information Center).

I could have retired, I thought to myself, when I reached the 30 year mark in 1999.

It paid for my college, and my heart goes out to all of you serving in the Navy wherever you are around the globe. Stay safe.

Hi, all:

I did my Basic at Lackland AFB from 21 August, 1972 until mid October. My Training Instructors were TSgt Orris L. Coffey and Ssgt Terrance James.

I had my Tech School in Power Plant (Aircraft Engine) Mechanics at Chanute AFB in Rantoul Illinois. Training Squadron #3355.

All straight jet engines. No training in Turbo Prop Engines. Which was ironic, since I was assigned to Little Rock AFB, Arkansas. The biggest Turbo-Propped C-130 patch on the planet.

Three and a half years at The Rock, with lots of TDYs to Germany, England, Turkey, Panama and the fall of Saigon, via Guam and the Phillipines.

Left The Rock and went into the Reserves at Andrews AFB, outside Washington, DC. I've been there as a Reservist since 1976 and Civilian Air Reserve Technician (Doing the same job in jeans, steel-toed shoes and T-Shirt) since 1981.

Lots of experience with engines on C-130s. Then Configurations and Support on C-141s; and most recently as a Crew Chief on KC-135R Refuelers.

My Reserve Unit has had a hand in Grenada, Just Cause in Panama, Desert Storm, Enduring and Iraqi Freedom.

It's been a busy couple of decades.

Jack.

Hey -- that's cool!! My FIL was a Merchant Marine, but he doesn't talk about it much. He served during WW2. The only real story I heard about was that when he came home after the war, he was so happy to see his mom that he hugged her so tight he broke one of her ribs. LOL!!
