FReeper Canteen ~ Tell Us About Your Military Service ~ July 6, 2006
Ms. Behavin & Old Sarge | 06 JULY 2006 | Ms. Behavin & Old Sarge

Posted on 07/05/2006 7:04:50 PM PDT by Old Sarge

Army?

Navy?

Air Force?

Marines?

Coast Guard?

Why did you choose that particular branch?

Where did you go to Basic Training or Boot Camp?

What is the name of your unit? (Division?)

What is their (your) mascot?

Tell us how much you loved your DI!

How long were you at Boot Camp/Basic Training, before you questioned the parentage of the senior Drill Sergeant? How long were you in service before you realized that the instructors were right in all that they taught you?

Your first landing on an aircraft carrier

Your first parachute jump

The heaviest vehicle you got to drive

The largest weapon you got to use

Did you serve before email?

Did you have a personal nickname?

It is our pleasure and honor to be here for our Troops, past, present and future...
and especially during this Week, the 4th of July we remember that we owe our freedom to you.
Thank you for your service and sacrifice, and God bless you.

A gentle reminder from Ms.B:
Please, no politics in The Canteen.
The Troops need a place to rest, relax and relate, and that place is The Canteen.
Have fun and play nice!

Ah, yes, the Clinton years when ten divisions just disappeared. And today, their camp followers say "why didn't you send more troops?"

My dad, who was a Naval Captain, got me in the Naval Reserve when I was a junior in high school. His theory was that I could have easier access to the Naval Academy through the Naval Reserve. He also knew that I would go in the Navy as a Seaman if I didn't go on to an Officer position from a college....thus avoiding the Army draft for Viet-Nam. I had no clue at the time. I did two weeks of Naval boot camp and two weeks afloat in the Navy during that summer.

Going to three high schools, I always ended up with liturature courses and didn't have a good basis in English composition. I took the English Composition SAT once and got a 470, which the Naval Academy threw out. Anything then below 500 was thrown out. I had very high verbal and math scores and the US Merchant Marine Academy accepted me.

I receive a Commission as a Ensign in the Naval Reserve and was a licensed Third Mate in the Merchant Marine.

My military service?

I taught basic mathematics to everyone in my brother's unit in 'Nam. I was 4.

I didn't know what to write when we were all writing letters. (My sister wrote "Dark Shadows" updates.) My mother told me to write what I know. I knew how to count and add numbers. So every letter started with "How are you? I am fine." and then went into what I knew. No one ever told me not to write it. For that matter, no one ever told me to write anything different, so I wrote similar letters every time.

I found out years later that whenever my brother received mail, he was ordered (yes, "ordered") to post my letter on the bulletin board.

I believe he also submitted one of my letters (and a couple more serious ones) to the committee picking the letters for the memorial in lower Manhattan. (None of them were picked.)

If this sound familiar to any of you, send me FreepMail. I'd like to keep his ID private since I'm writing this without his knowledge.

I also recently discovered just what my father did in the army. He was a chief in charge of a plane that was his to keep maintained and ready. The pilot might change, but he always had the same plane. My nother told me this, so I don't have all the details (she didn't recall). I'll have to take this up with him next time I see him.
