N.Y. Poll: Hillary May Not Carry State in 2008

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton could have trouble carrying her own state if she runs for president in 2008 and Republicans nominate either former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani or Sen. John McCain of Arizona, a poll of New York voters reported Tuesday.

Lee Miringoff of Marist College's Institute for Public Opinion said the statewide poll, conducted in conjunction with New York City's WNBC-TV, is bad news for the former first lady given concerns nationally among some Democrats about her "electability."

In a theoretical matchup for the 2008 presidential race, the WNBC/Marist poll found Giuliani favored by 50 of New York voters to 46 percent for Clinton. The poll had Clinton at 48 percent and McCain at 45 percent.

"The question often centers around, can she be elected, can she carry a red state?" said the Marist pollster. "These numbers suggest that even right here in her own backyard the bluest of the blue Rudy Giuliani and Senator John McCain would give her a run for her money."

In New York, there are 5 million Democrats and 3 million Republicans, and the state has not been carried by a Republican presidential contender since Ronald Reagan in 1980 and 1984.

Clinton did better 58 percent to 36 percent against Gov. George Pataki, who like Giuliani is eyeing the 2008 GOP presidential nomination.

Marist's telephone poll of 735 registered voters was conducted May 1-7 and has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Polls have shown Clinton well ahead of her potential Republican opposition in her bid this year for a second Senate term and national surveys have her as the front-runner for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.

In the WNBC/Marist poll, 49 percent of New Yorkers said Clinton should run for president in 2008, but 66 percent said it was unlikely she could be elected. Fifty-one percent said Giuliani should run, but 52 percent said it was unlikely he could be elected president. Seventy-four percent of New Yorkers polled said Pataki should not run for president.

"..the state has not been carried by a Republican presidential contender since Ronald Reagan in 1980 and 1984".

Does that mean the GOP should nominate a CONSERVATIVE????

It always hurts me to se Hillary called a former First Lady. She has no idea what entails being a lady.

Most of New York State is conservative. The problem is that most of the population is clustered in the NYC/Long Island area which is possibly the most liberal part of the country outside of San Francisco.

No Senator who has not been a relected governor is going to be President in '08.

1. How did NY buy into Hitlary being a New Yorker in the first place.
2. Not sure about Guliani but McCain will get his clock cleaned by almost anybody outside of Arizona. If he did win the nod the press would turn on him like a pit bull.
3. Now that I think of it all the other names mentioned are losers as well.

I agree, a real conservative (Newt, or that Gilchrist guy) would be worth more than McCain.

Hillary/lady=oxymoron.

Hillary/harpie=synonym

Hillary/president/exalted leader=fantasy

That said, polls regarding 08 are worth less than used toilet paper.

Why anyone makes Hillary sound like a formidable general election candidate is a mystery to me. I think she's totally unelectable myself.

So what?Giuliani is very unlikely to be the nominee in 2008.

Anyone who thinks that Hillary would not carry this sorry state with 55-60% of the vote is kidding themselves.

Against Rudy certainly, and against McCain, until the Dems shread him, or he self shreads, or both.

I am hoping (delusional, I know!) that she will be defeated in NY when she next runs for Senate!

A upstate joined by just some of the downstaters? Maybe? To pull it off the Republicans would have to run the most RINO candidate they could find!

I want some of what you are smoking.
Maybe I will start talking funny too.
Only Republican eh? You mean as in Hitlery being one of the strongest supporters of abortion or her being able to refer to Republicans in the House as "running a plantation"?

N.Y. Poll: Hillary May Not Carry State in 2008

Actually, I think the Beast could carry NY state. You need strong, thick legs to carry heavy objects...and she appears to have those.

There are things going on beyond our knowledge. Formidable? Apparently. She got to be Senator through deceit and deception, it worked. Elected by those she loves walking on. Amazing. The brain-dead American voter, who elected Clinton TWICE. Simply amazing.

Giussolini the corrupt is on record as Mayor stating that he would not allow the police to crack down on illegal aliens and that he was in favor or in-state tuition for illegal aliens.

A corrupt, pro-gay, anti-gun multiculturalist like Giussolini will NOT get the nomination.

I live in NYC.
I think its you that's kidding yourself.
Ruddy already won elections to be mayor of New York City TWICE, despite RATS outnumbering Republicans 5 to 1.
And that was BEFORE 9/11.

Add in the conservative upstate New York state, and its going to be veryu hard for anyone to beat Rubby in a statewide election in this state, including a prsidemntial election.
