Former Libertarian Presidential Candidate Harry Browne Passes Away

Harry Browne, who was the Libertarian Party presidential candidate in 1996 and 2000, is reported by multiple sources to have died yesterday. I just confirmed the general information with Jim Babka of DownSizeDC. DownSizeDC intends to be distributing pertinent information by e-mail and on their website later this evening.

Pending a statement from family or friends, the best (speculative) published source of information about his condition is currently on Wiki:

"In June of 2005 an unknown neurological illness confined him to a wheelchair. After spending a considerable amount of time in the hospital, he resumed some of his writing and speaking, though it was uncertain whether he will walk again. He succumbed to illness on 1 March 2006."

The stereotype I had always heard was that the Libertarian Party was basically divided into three categories: 1) Drug legalization advocates, 2) Brilliant "nerdy" economist types, and 3) those disgruntled with major party politics.

I always saw Mr. Browne in that second category. I never voted for him because I supported the Republican nominees those years, but after watching him in several debates and reading his campaign platform, I did have a great deal of respect for him.

Please remember that prior to 1980, conservatives did not dominate the Republican Party. And, prior to 1964, they were not even that strong of a faction. President Ford was first elected to Congress in 1948. He was a leader in the party long before the conservative movement seriously took hold.

I didn't like the Libertarian party. I did hear him speak and I sort of liked him. Also, Dole wasn't going to win and I could never bring myself to vote for Clinton.

This sucks :-( I met harry browne briefly in 2000 and I have 5 of his books he was a true patriot and a great speaker he inspired me to dump the repubs and become a full fledged big L libertarian back in 2000 he will be missed by a lot of americans. other then the brainwashed bots on this thread that are jumping up and down in glee for a chance to piss on his grave by leaving snarky comments on what a piece of garbage he was and how hes in the great bong in the sky.
