If JimRob, etc. approve this is the Live Thread for the Canadian General Election, on January 23rd, 2005.
We have a while to go before the returns start coming in, but I thought the thread needed to get up and running.
Bill Graham? Not sure...he seems like he's from Rosedale (the elitist capital of Canada).
I have such high respect for Barone's election analysis, that this give me very high hopes!
This caused a No Confidence vote- which, had the sitting government possesed any ethics, would have led to their stepping down.
Just got home from work, firing up the auld Dell and low and behold, here I see all the people I have been reading for the past two months!
Such vaunted company! I thank my lucky stars that there still exist such Canadian patriots as these men and women I have been communicating with. Canada has that to be proud of.
Thank you Canadian Patriots for this live thread, now back to my role as a lurking ex pat.Scotch Whiskey in hand, on the rocks, I broke out my 21 year old Dalmore....A toast...to all Patriots of CANADA! Long may your Lum Reek!
GO HARPER GO! GIVE ME A REASON TO MOVE BACK TO CANADA!
Amen again. However Preston, I figure that Layton has pretty much backed himself into an "ethical" corner. He was the one who was so angry along with the Conservatives when Martin REFUSED to step down after the no confidence motion passed. And then he promptly goes ahead and signs the nomination papers of the homosexual THIEF Svend Robinson. The man, completely, used up any political integrity he could lay claim to at that point. I don't under estimate the desperation of Martin as you say but I just have a feeling that Martin has "gone too far". Layton HAS to know that Martin would be glad to USE him right now, but the minute he didn't need him anymore, he would chew him up and spit him out!! NOBODY trusts Martin anymore. But then, your the expert - do you think I have a valid perception here? CO
Prayers for Canada. Bump!
Some people have to tear others down to feel good about themselves.
It's a sign of a weak personality and low self-esteem.
I like Michael Barone too pb. Thanks for that uplifting report.
I have CQ loaded up in my browser and I'm ready to go. A little over 45 minutes to go until the live blogging begins/first polls close. Get pumped, people!
Thanks for the ping.
GMMAC, have a good time, hope you can get a hold of us sometime tonight.
Well, I got it. Pretty clever.
Watching for election news from the Southern U.S.; no particular Canadian connection, but of course hoping for a Conservative win.
For those with Sirius Satellite Radio, CBC Radio 1 (which I gather is the Canadian equivalent of our NPR) is on channel 137. I understand they're not permitted to release any returns until all polling stations in the country close (10 PM EST), even though polls close in the Atlantic provinces at 7 PM EST. But maybe we'll get some hints before then.
Best of luck to the Tories!
Thanks Meg!! I have been praying for this election too. If ever we needed change it's NOW!! Actually it was 10 years ago, 2 years into the Chretien nightmare for this country.
No...I think you've summed up the depth of Martin's desperation quite nicely.
While I have absolutely no love for Jack Layton, I've personally found it hysterical to see that for Martin, it's come down to begging third, fourth and fifth parties for their vote. I think it's also quite funny to see that the roles of the NDP and Liberals are effectively reversed from the last election. Layton can now truthfully say that a vote for a Liberal is a wasted vote, as your party will be on hiatus for the next four years retooling.
I've seen the reverse here on FR. When confronted it's put off as a ribbing, kidding etc . Underneath , it's hatred. Why who knows?
NATIONAL RESULTS

VANCOUVER: Canada's opposition Conservatives have taken a huge lead over the ruling Liberals and will have little trouble winning the January 23 election, a new poll said yesterday.
No matter what happens tonight, none of us would have been able to get as far as we've gotten, without Free Republic.
Thank you Jim.
God Bless You, and yours.
Big BUMP to that fanfan
Without Free Republic I'd still be stuck on stupid!!
Wow, thanks for that article Meg!! Honestly, this morning I got on my knees and prayed that God would intervene in this election, by even changing peoples minds right in the voting booth!!
Hi Prairiebreeze!
In case you want to put individual riding results and need fringe party colors, Wikipedia is the best place to go.
Ridings won't be called here at the same time that the MSM calls them.
