PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: The President arrived back at the White House from Camp David this afternoon, as his wife and daughter arrived safely in Ghana on their first leg of a visit to Africa. Along with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, on Monday they will head the official delegation to the inauguration of Liberia's first woman president.

In Texas, the President's father, former President GHW Bush, was on hand to christen the USS San Antonio, the first in the Navy's new class of amphibious landing ships. The former president was the keynote speaker.

Navy Commissions USS San Antonio Former President George H.W. Bush delivered the keynote address as the U.S. Navy commissioned the USS San Antonio at Naval Station Ingleside.

The San Antonio is the lead ship in the Navy’s new LPD 17 class, which will eventually replace three classes of amphibious vessels that are aging.

The former president was among more than 6,000 people Sunday at Naval Station Ingleside today who watched the USS San Antonio go into service.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, was also on hand for the commissioning ceremony of the $1.7 billion warship.

The San Antonio is the first of the Navy's new class of amphibious landing ships.

It has a crew of 360 sailors and can haul up to 800 Marines and their equipment.

The San Antonio also has two surgical theaters, a 24-bed infirmary and other medical facilities.

The ship must now go through a few years of training before it's deployed in 2008.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

During an interview with the press corps on her plane, the First Lady discussed several topics, including the following:

Laura Bush begins visit to West Africa

ACCRA, Ghana (AP) — First lady Laura Bush said Sunday that the U.S. government is right to eavesdrop on Americans with suspected ties to terrorists, and that President Bush worries that revelations about the domestic spying program will cripple efforts to foil terrorists.

"I think the American people expect the United States government and the president to do what they can to make sure there's not an attack by foreign terrorists," Mrs. Bush said just before landing here to begin a four-day stay in West Africa.

"I think he was worried that it would undermine our efforts by alerting terrorists to what our efforts are," she said.

***I have to make myself eat vegetables...***

Me, too! I'm so glad my friend taught me how to microwave acron squash without having to risk life and limb while trying to cut it in half before cooking. It's one of the FEW vegetables I like.

Great buncha pictures tonight, Wolfstar. Thanks. That new ship is beautiful--sleek.

Loved the pictures of the first lady and Barbara in Africa. They got quite a welcome from the people there.

Loved the pictures of the first lady and Barbara in Africa.

The people seemed glad to have Laura visit, and she fits in wherever she goes.

She is a gracious visitor as well as hostess when it's her turn. She acts naturally and doesn't try to act like "royalty" like some first ladies have done.

That's it, exactly.

'I had heard that it's now something like 27 or 28 straight days of rain?'

27 as of yesterday and the record is 33 in Seattle. It hasn't rained here yet today, but another storm is apparently on the way, so it just depends upon whether or not it hits before midnight. The forecast for the next 5 days is rain or showers. As I understand it, even if we don't break the record in Seattle, it may in other cities in WA as it rained there today.

I've lived here for quite some time and have never seen anything like this. The big concern is the mud slides and floods we've already had in some areas and rivers and creeks threatening in others. Also, the ground is so wet, if we get a big wind, some of the big trees that don't have deep roots are going to start toppling and create a lot of damage.

She is a first lady to always be proud of. Thank God we have her instead of "what" it could have been. *shudder*

That is why I like parsnips because they are lovely and sweet, I think I prefer them roast and crispy but boiled is OK.

Hey Kit .. of all things, I don't have the recipe I used, but went grocery shopping today and got some Oscar Meyer Real Bacon Bits, and they have a recipe on the package:

Quick Bacon Broccoli Raisin Salad

Toss 14 oz. bite sized broccoli(1 pkg. -- don't know how much that means of fresh, but just improvise- seems like it was about 3 cups that I made)

1/2 c raisins

1/3 c. Oscar Meyer Real Bacon Bits

14 c. finely chopped red onion

1/3 c Planters sunflower kernels (optional)

1 bottle Kraft's coleslaw dressing

Refrigerate 30 mins. = makes 4-6 servings

Substitutions:

1 cup Miracle Whip (I used Hellman's Mayo) or Miracle Whip Light dressing plus

2 tbsp. each sugar and vinegar for coleslaw dressing.

My note: it's also delicious with raspberry vinaigrette dressing, too. I don't follow recipes to the letter much, I improvise, and I add broken walnut pieces.

My husband just ducked in to remind me that the season premiere of "24" with Keifer Sutherland starts in an hour in the Pacific Time Zone on Fox broadcast channel.

Anybody here a fan?
