Why would I assume that Texas would have scored if the play had been reviewed and recalled?

Same difference.

Exactly. The assumption that USC would have stopped Texas from scoring a TD after that "down/lateral" play at the 10 or 11 yard line -- when they couldn't stop Texas all night long -- is utterly silly.

"Why would I assume that USC would have held them to a field goal????.." LOL! Dr. Phil said the best indicator of future performance is past performance. On the previous drive they were held to a field goal. This is all silly speculation. Congrats to the Longhorns, but the point remains they were awarded a TD they didn't deserve and we'll never know what the alternative would have been.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I already freepmailed the other poster that reminded me of Navy's bowl win. I told him, I forgot even though I watched part of the game and was glad they won. I wish they had whipped ND too.

Seriously! Not just on the 11 yd line but 1st and 10 on the 11. No, it's not guaranteed but the likelihood of VY scoring a TD with 4 chances from the 11 would have been about 99%. There were other blown calls , too but what about the blatant holding by USC? It was ridiculous!~

If the following season is any indication LSU was a fluke. The same can be said for Auburn. If they really were national championship calibre, it wasn't reflected in the following season and sportswriters and coaches didn't see fit to award them a share of the championship they way they did SC the previous year.

LOL - LSU has done just fine the years following their BCS championship. Auburn lost three players in the top 10 and have kept on winning.

Those voters that you so much admire also thought that LSU stood no chance against Oklahoma. They also thought that Oklahoma was the second best team last year as well - their judgement isn't very good.

The point is that USC only has one or two regular season games a year where there is even the slightest chance of losing. Teams in other conferences have about 5 or 6 real chances of losing - that is why it is so hard to repeat in those conferences.

Let's see how many unbeaten years USC has when they play Tennessee, Georgia, LSU, Auburn, Alabama and Florida all in the same year.

Fine -- but I haven't seen anyone in the sports journalism field make that argument.

"Let's see how many unbeaten years USC has when they play Tennessee, Georgia, LSU, Auburn, Alabama and Florida all in the same year." And how many of those teams did Texas play?

Fine -- but I haven't seen anyone in the sports journalism field make that argument.

The poster cited the exact same play that was reviewed this year and was ruled a valid pitch.

Sport journalists are actually even more uniformed than regular journalists. The are two types - homer cheerleaders and those that are contrarians. Every city has one of each type and that's all they do.

I follow college football pretty closely and every article I ever read by a sports journalist has been full of errors or misunderstandings.

We all know how biased and disconnected from the truth AP writers are from something as serious as politics, conservative issues, and national security.

Yet, we are expected to accept their opinions on something as trivial as football rankings?

Big XII - 4 national titles in the last 10 years, 7 in the last 15.

"because TEXAS was ramming it down USC's throat that drive, LOL....no reason to beleive they would not have continued to do so....." And just before that drive SC was rammming it down the Longhorn's throat until they got an interception. A score looked like a sure thing for them. And before that drive, Texas looked like it was going to score and then fumbled and was lucky to recover and settle for a FG. There is no way to know what would have happened.

You sound about like me. I was 12 the last time Texas won a National Championship and back then I just assumed Texas won every game, especially after they vanquished Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl. It's been a long long wait.

Austin is going to go crazy for the next week or so. You don't know how much the win means to the folks around here. The only ones unhappy are the transplanted Aggies (of which there are many) and the folks who have been lobbying to fire Mack Brown (I wonder if www.fireMackBrown.com is still online hehe). He just earned all those millions we've been paying him last night. And imagine how much better recruting will get for a couple of years. No more losing the likes of Adrian Peterson to those Red River Raiders.

This tastes soooooooo Sweet!

He's not really a true quarterback . . .

The role of quarterbacks changes as fast as any other position in any sport.

Football is not played the same today as it was just twenty years ago.

Players like Young will be flooding the NFL, and I can see teams having a set of starters who can alternate between various roles.

Having two players on the offense who can run and throw well would tear a defense apart.

I can't even imagine the fear of being on defense and knowing that the QB could easily run, throw or hand the ball off to someone else who can run or throw.

Oh puhleeze -- sports writers aren't part of the liberal media any more than pro athletes are a part of the Hollywood elite. And the coaches' poll also reflected that view.

OK how about that gift of a incomplete pass for USC, when it clearly was an interception by Texas? There are all kinds of what ifs we can talk about.
