IT'S OFFICIAL: 2005 WILL BE the newspaper industry's worst year since the last ad industry recession. And things aren't looking much better for next year either, according to a top Wall Street firm's report on newspaper publishing. "Sadly, 2005 is shaping up as the industry's worst year from a revenue growth perspective since the recession impacted 2001-2002 period," says the report from Goldman Sachs, adding a warning that meaningful growth in 2006 is "very unlikely."

Obviously it is not bad enough because The LA Times, the NYTimes, The Boston Globe, and the Miami Herald still exist.

Never considered total energy cost of distributing the news.Another reason to get yer news from FR. We're greener than the NY Times!

The weak ad environment for newspapers has caused Goldman to scale back its 2006 growth forecast to 3.5 percent from 4.0 percent. Nah. Even 3.5 percent is too optimistic.
I would be surprised if 06 growth were even 2 percent. And from there, negative growth, with a steadily steepening slope.
There are way too many folks just like us here at F.R. who are finally ready cancel that daily insult to hardworking, law-abiding, troop supporting, English speaking, family oriented, truth-seeking, normal people.
Consider canceling your liberal newspaper. If you feel you cannot live without it, they'll let you resubscribe.

Gee, if they'd just start a conservative newspaper or a conservative television network, they'd get rich.

I still do. But only for the local public notices, the comic page and the crossword puzzle. The rest is recycled or used to wrap garbage.>/p>

It's comforting to know that there is still a price to pay in this nation for being proven to be dishonest and manipulative.
To: HangnJudge
And yet, the newspapers continue to act like arrogant king-makers, just like they always have.
Someone needs to tell these guys to wake up. I recall someone from the NYT on Jon Stewart's show saying how Internet newsies are "people who want to have their own views affirmed" instead of getting the 'real news' from the MSM papers.
I was shocked that this guy, and clearly the Times in general, was so completely out of touch with how the world was changing.

They are good for kitty litter too. Actually, our community newspaper here has been growing by leaps and bounds, but they pretty much stay out of the MSM stuff and concentrate on local issues.

And this is a bad thing because..... Because it will inflict an unexpected financial burden on some readers. With diminishing number of pages per issue, the people that have depended on the newspaper to provide them with "free" bird cage liner and/or fish wrap will now have to spend additional monies to purchase those items ;-)
