I hope President Bush nominates Michael Luttig, and that we aren't bitterly disappointed that Miers never had her chance to show us who she is.

This is a woman's seat; he will nominate a woman.

Given his limited choices, it will be Edith Clement (who was almost picked before Roberts) or Williams from SC (whom I know nothing about).

It will not be Brown.

The good news is that, hopefully, the ubers will now support whomever Bush puts forward. I'm listening to Laura Ingraham for the first time in months, and she is STILL trashing Miers while saying she did the right thing.

I'm still waiting to hear what Harriet Miers' church membership REALLY is. Several stories still out there, no one has set it straight. That was a primary reason for not trusting in her nomination 100%.
---

Harriet Miers is a member of the independent Christian Church, which is a very conservative Evangelical group. It was obvious to many of the Evangelicals that was one of the main reasons she was attacked.

I was not a Miers fan particularly....but I remember how upset a lot of us were over the GANG of 14's power in the Senate to keep Frist from calling for the Nuke option....

We were FRIED because 14 Senators had so much power....but, it seems like it is now just a relatively small amount of PUNDITS that have made this decision....are we happy about THAT???

Think about it...Miers NEVER GOT A HEARING....and yet the vocal pundits who have the "bully pulpit" of the press...have hammered and hammered until she quit...but worse, until THE POTUS had to accept.

This has nothing to do with Miers per se...this has no set a precedent that a minority of people....can sway a process before it has even gone to completion...and most of the people doing the swaying WERE NOT ELECTED.

Dear Mr President. Honor the heroism of Rosa Parks - and make liberal heads explode at the same time - by nominating a fellow African-American from Alabama:

I don't know about that. I would love it to be true, but I dunno.

> Laura Ingraham just began her show by saying "The first thing we should do is thank Harriet Miers, what she did was a hard thing to do."

Couldn't agree more. A huge thanks for Ms. Miers for doing what needed to be done.

A handful at FR have opposed Miers nomination since the moment she got it. My own personal impression has been that their impetus was religious affiliation and little else.

Very well said. Even though I was all for giving Miers her day in the Senate Hearings and wanted to hear from her own mouth how she stood, I hope the next nominee is a good one and will not be torn apart before he or she even gets a hearing like Miers was. Its going to be a tough fight ahead for anyone whom Bush picks.

No, I seriously think this has been a very bad thing - Bush not only has Dems who have been able to thwart him at almost every step (even though they are technically the minority party), but a GOP that has proved it has no party discipline and cannot be relied on even to give his pick a fair hearing.

This is really good in a way...but sad in others. We all know the good part. But the sad part is "we eat our own" .....now it is going to be harped on for weeks. Secondly, many who was miss miers would be offended of her treatment and turnn to the dark side as the good side trashed her. Third this could tee off the best thing the conservative movement had, that is W himself. What if he says the heck with them...they treat a good woman like this, and I'll just submit another Ruthie baby to the court, out of spite. I'm conservative, but after being pee'd on, I"d think the same thing.

One point: Bush will NOT feel compelled to pick a woman this time

Guess again.

"Let's see the media try to sink the first African American woman appointee to the SCOTUS!"

Yeah!
Let's see them support her the way they supported the first African American male appointee.

Let's see them support her the way they've supported the first African American woman Secretary of State.

(Unless you were suggesting Michael Jackson?)

Not likely at all. It would be kind of insulting to throw her the bone of a consolation prize after being tapped for the SC. Kind of like giving a political candidate lukewarm support then throwing them the bone of an Administration appointment after they get creamed in the election. Not exactly complimentary.

She's a Libertarian and cannot be trusted.

Most L/libertarians have a better understanding of the US Constitution than most Republicans.

a "strong conservative" who is KNOWN to be so doesn't have much of a chance. The anti-Miers faction just bullied there way into the hands of the gang of fourteen.

We want this. We want the nuclear option.  We want tough leadership.  We want all the senate RINO's exposed so we can get rid of them too.
