TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Police used tear gas to break up a rock-throwing crowd that had gathered to protest a planned march Saturday by the National Socialist Movement.
At least two dozen members of a Roanoke, Va.-based group that calls itself "America's Nazi Party" had gathered at Wilson Park just before noon and were to march under police protection.

I'm sorry that you don't understand. They were going to march in a black neighborhood over a black neighbor and white neighbor arguing over a fence.

Yes, I agree with legislation that inhibits hate.Frankly, I'm offended by your implication that speech can be "hateful". That is very offensive to lovers of free speech. Hateful in fact.

"Speech that deliberately offends, degrades, intimidates, dehumanizes- incites violence, prejudice, contempt? Yes, I agree with legislation that inhibits hate."
All that is in the ear of the beholder, what bother one may mean nothing to another.. so since there is infinite possibilities for offending someone then the only preventive method would be to silence everyone..

Tell me that you don't honestly believe that the First Amendment means you are free to say ANYTHING that comes into a persons head?

Either the civic association or deed restriction dictates the standards of "fence". Does anyone have further details?

"The city had the right to deny the permit. Some idiot didn't."
The government has the right to reduce my taxes. I think they should. They haven't, but its OK for me not to pay them anyway, because "some idiot didn't" do what I thought they should.
RIIIGHT.
Rally still legal. Rioters illegal. No simpler summary possible. No woulda coulda shoulda.
Not describing mayhem as "stellar" behaviour is far from calling it what it is.
The rioters are responsible for their actions. Denying them their responsibility is denying them their humanity. Expect better behaviour and you will get it.

As the folks in NYC found out after Crown Hgts., you have no 'right' to expect police protection in such circumstaces. IOW, you're on your own. I was thinking about the Crown Heights riot too, when I heard this story.
If Yankel Rosenbaum HAD pulled out a weapon and bust a cap in the head of any of his attackers that night, I'd lay odds that he'd have been indicted for murder and sued by the creep's family.
Isn't that how these scenarios play out?

Like it or not, free speech has limits. Where we place those limits determines the quality of our politics.
No one is excusing looting and anarchy. Arrest them all.
As I posted #65 and #120...
Exceptions established by the courts to the First Amendment protections include the following: Defamation; Causing panic; Fighting words; Incitement to crime; Sedition; Obscenity.
Fighting words: In the famous case of Chaplinsky v. New Hampshire, the U.S. Supreme Court held that the First Amendment does not protect "fighting words -- those which by their very utterance inflict injury or tend to incite an immediate breach of the peace." (315 U.S. 568, 572 [1942])
Note that the harm involved is physical harm caused by someone else who was provoked by the speaker whose speech is being suppressed. The fact that someone else flies into a rage and causes physical harm results in justifying suppression of speech by another person.
It is simply not a cut-and-dried issue.

Denying them their responsibility is denying them their humanity. Btw, where did I do that? Check my posts and you'll find that I refered to their "criminal behaviour". I NEVER said it wasn't.

I guess we should change that to : Anyone can protest as long as the militant Black groups and street thugs don't threaten to riot. This tactic seems to be workin for them. Sick. Disgusting.

Giving every impression that it was the NAZIs, who were rampaging, because authorities had cancelled their event.
I've seen two reports and heard one on the radio. EVERY SINGLE ONE made it appear that the neo-nazis were rioting. Even on Fox. (I'm done with Fox).
The MSM makes me sick. This feels like Big Brother re-writing history.
