White House warns holdouts

White House officials have a message for conservative Republican senators who have expressed doubt about supporting Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers.

The West Wing types argue that she will turn out to be just as conservative as President Bush says she is, and voting against her would be an embarrassment over the long term. This message is intended for holdouts including Sam Brownback of Kansas, Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, and Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania.

"If Miers is confirmed and she winds up being what the president says she is, Republican senators who voted against her will look quite foolish," says a GOP insider. This could cause a backlash against these legislators from conservative Bush supporters at the grass roots.

Exactly right. Republicans have abandoned conservatives, moving to the left, just like the Dems have. That's why the party will have to change to regain the support (financial and electoral) it had.

Explain the aid and comfort you give to the enemy by attacking Harriet Miers.

Perhaps you should try to have a little less hate in your heart.

Yes, I can't believe what I'm hearing now. Could you imagine how depressed we'd be if Reinquest was replaced by a President Kerry. I don't want to even think about the dark vision of the future that would bring.

I am upset about Miers, yes. But I am not going to think for one moment that voting for Bush was a mistake.

You are saying thus lady does not suck up.

Have you not read about the suck up notes she wrote Bush.

"You are the greatist governor ever" etc etc

Someone who writes a note like that is writing a suck up note.

"I despise traitors while our men (and women) are being killed overseas. I just despise them."

Do you remotely understand what exactly our troops are being killed overseas for? Little things like freedom of expression, government by the people, state policy open to debate and criticism. Comments like these only make a mockery of their mission. One ought to be ashamed for impugning the motives of well intentioned people as "traitors" because you have a domestic policy disagreement with them, that has no relation to the war or the national effort in it whatsoever.

In all my years as a conservative, I NEVER encountered ANY conservative who believed it was wrong to voice opposition to any president regardless of party affiliation, and ideology (except for opposition to a war for the good of the troops) until my affiliation with Free Republic. I've encountered Rino's who thought that way, but NEVER conservatives.

I like and respect President Bush and voted for him twice. I also voted for his father twice. And while he holds some conservative positions, I never saw him as committed to the cause as many of the best conservatives I have come to know throughout my life. Thus, to me he has NEVER been THE leader in the conservative movement, but a leader. He is President of the United States and Leader of the Republican Party, but he is not THE leader among conservatives.

If he doesn't stop twisting the arms of Republicans and withdraw this nomination, his presidency and leadership, will continue to plummet.

Interesting statistic I heard today...50% of Americans believe President Bush should be impeached. It is something about which GW should be ever mindful.

This isn't about reservations. This is about an evil attack on Harriet Miers by evil people.

"It's long been known (and promised) that we were going to send up a conservative (that means pro-life) nominee in the mold of a Scalia. There is absolutely no excuse not to do so now. Who cares how bloody the Senate battles may get. If there's no woman who wants the job, then I'm sure there are plenty of qualified men. Somebody up there really screwed the pooch on this one."

"Whoever's advising the president on this needs to grow a bigger pair!!"

As in Vietname, they are being killed more effectively because our enemies have allies within the country.

"but without the effort to get others to the polls, the RNC will be in big trouble."

Don't worry. After Bush accepted all the blame for Katrina (at least that's how all the headlines played his mea culpa), I'm sure the percentage of black votes for Republicans will surge in 06 and 08, more than making up for the loss of foot soldiers.

There is no room for your kind of Fuehrerprinzip in conservatism.

When a leader is left only with haters and fanatics, he is in trouble.

Correct. The thing I'm not sure about is whose a$$ is getting kicked ours or theirs.

Time will tell but I'm apprehensive.

Did he not go to mat for a long list of conservative justices all over the country?

No. He did not. He just renominated them, and then let then languish in the Senate without objecting. 6 Circuit Court nominations I can name off the top of my head, 2 of which have been out of committee since Feb and June respectively.

Have you heard him go to bat for those noiminees since the gang of 14 deal got all wrapped up? I haven't, and this issue is real important to me.

And before you go calling the reaction "breathtaking," just slow down and read some of the more thoughtful posts, with an open mind.

You may not believe this is a big deal, and you are certainly entitled to feel that way. And I might be wrong - am often. But I think this was a serious mistake that has really energized conservatives against the GOP. And it's not because we want to be disappointed - not at all. We're talking, and the GOP is not listening.

My trust in president Bush took a major hit when he called the Minutemen a vigilante group.Does he really think of them as vigilantes or was he just sucking up to Fox?

NO, because no one will ever remember or even care who voted against her.

You confuse admiration with sucking-up. Pity.
