From Staff Reports
NORMAN -- An explosion near the University of Oklahoma's Gaylord Family-Memorial Stadium killed one person Saturday, OU officials said.

The explosion happened at the courtyard near the George Lynn Cross Hall, Botany-Microbiology Building on OU's campus, which is west of the stadium, according to Sgt. Gary Robinson of the University police department.

The explosion happened during the second quarter of Oklahoma's game against Kansas State.

After the explosion, police set up a perimeter of several blocks and made fans exit the stadium to the east.

It seems that they should release those threats, just so we can be on the lookout.

OPINION: So, it's possible it was a work accident, then.

"..parked buses .."

Elsewhere, I read that this bomb went off near where the opposing team parked their buses. It's possible that this was a very stupid prank.

One of the other posters on my OURivals forum wrote this, about the buses you mentioned:

~~~~
[snip] "... Our bus was one of three impounded by the FBI, so we hitched a ride home on another bus, just got home. The driver of the bus parked just behind us (another of the three buses impounded) happened to be looking at the guy who was sitting on a bench outside the George Lynn Cross Botany building, which is RIGHT AT where our bus was. This other driver was knocked off his feet by the concussion and otherwise unhurt but spending the night with the FBI and local constabulary. ...." [snip]
~~~~~~

Hope it's OK for me to post this, I'm a newbie at posting here, but 7-year lurker. If not, I'll be glad to edit/delete.

In case you haven't noticed, the MSM is busily BURYING this story. Not even mentioned on Fox's 11:30 (west coast) summary saturday night.

CNN can't be bothered.

sure Law enforcement has direct lines to the cell providers specifically for that reason... this came about due to incidents like the Madrid bombing when the found that cell phones were the triggers. so if the brought down the network in the area it would not have surprised me at all.

Not in a car -- on the person -- don't know if it was in a backpack but the second one they found was in a backpack according to the first reports; however, I only heard that twice coming home from the game -- live about 4 miles from campus and was in some traffic. Then I got home and have heard very little on the radio since.

OPINION: If I recall correctly, that "goal posts" threat had was depicted either in a graphic and/or drawing.

I could be wrong -- it's been awhile.

plus it appears especially after the bombing in London where the bombers left the bombs and ran.. they are having more trouble finding "willing" suicide bombers

"Elsewhere, I read that this bomb went off near where the opposing team parked their buses. It's possible that this was a very stupid prank."

Good question, my mind leans toward more than a prank because of the size of the explosion as described by those present. This device killed. The fact that all the major govt. security agencies are present makes me think there's more to the story.

Personally I think the title should remain as is. How many people blow themselves up when trying to commit suicide? And, how many people would use more than one "explosive device" to do it? This is far from a run of the mill suicide IMHO. I think we have more to lose from assuming this was a lone depressed person, than erring on the side of caution and assuming this could've been a suicide bomber related to the current War. I think we should reserve judgement, but given the media blackout and the numerous eyewitness postings on this thread alone it appears as if we may never hear the truth in the MSM...

I also believe we are seeing a certain 'quieting' of this story. Hope I'm wrong and we get complete and unfiltered story tomorrow and in the days to come.

No, it was an actual quote: I think it aired about 18 months ago. They specifically mentioned goalposts.

Thanks!

We sit in Row 71 and it only goes to 72 in our part of the stadium and above us is clear sky. The upper decks start over about two sections from us. I told my kids and their friend if we ever get evacuated just stay here until it is clear below. We don't even leave our seats until the aisles clear out after the game.

The stadium is used for a tornado shelter as it is reinforced concrete. Suspicious to me that this happened right before halftime.

OFF TOPIC, but Informative:

Actually, now that you mention it, let me post the current WORLDWIDE CAUTION that is still current today.

FYI.
---
---

Note: The following text is an exact quote:
---

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_1161.html

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman
This information is current as of today, Sat Oct 01 2005 23:39:07 GMT-0700.

Worldwide Caution

August 02, 2005

This Public Announcement updates information on the continuing threat of terrorist actions and violence against Americans and interests overseas. This supersedes the Worldwide Caution dated March 8, 2005 and expires on February 2, 2006.

The Department of State remains concerned about the continued threat of terrorist attacks, demonstrations and other violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests overseas. Americans are reminded that demonstrations and rioting can occur with little or no warning. Ongoing events in Iraq have resulted in demonstrations and associated violence in several countries; such events are likely to continue for the foreseeable future. Nation-wide elections in Afghanistan scheduled for mid-September may also trigger violent anti-American actions.

Current information suggests that al-Qa’ida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks against U.S. interests in multiple regions, including Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. These attacks may employ a wide variety of tactics to include assassinations, kidnappings, hijackings and bombings. Extremists may elect to use conventional or non-conventional weapons, and target both official and private interests. The latter may include facilities where U.S. citizens and other foreigners congregate or visit, including residential areas, business offices, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools, hotels and public areas.

In the wake of the July 2005 London bombings and the March 2004 train attacks in Madrid, Americans are reminded of the potential for terrorists to attack public transportation systems. In addition, extremists may also select aviation and maritime services as possible targets.

U.S. citizens are strongly encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance, be aware of local events, and take the appropriate steps to bolster their personal security. For additional information, please refer to “A Safe Trip Abroad” found at http://travel.state.gov.

U.S. Government facilities worldwide remain at a heightened state of alert. These facilities may temporarily close or periodically suspend public services to assess their security posture. In those instances, U.S. embassies and consulates will make every effort to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens. Americans abroad are urged to monitor the local news and maintain contact with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

As the Department continues to develop information on any potential security threats to U.S. citizens overseas, it shares credible threat information through its Consular Information Program documents, available on the internet at http://travel.state.gov. In addition to information on the internet, travelers may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. or outside the U.S. and Canada on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444.

I kinda figured it was the PhiKap house, but didn't want to *assume* so, just from your name, lol! Yeah, I know exactly where you mean. Know the DG house well. And I think I had some Home Ec (don't tell anybody) classes right across the street, IIRC. That was *before* they put that bookstore where they did. I'm old.

I just posted someone's quote from my OU fanforum who mentioned the benches, so maybe that's the same area that we think could be the "courtyard" of Cross Hall.
