Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VII
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 8:01:35 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.

An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.

On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

Welsh responded that the President did not get out immediately and define himself. By not acting immediately, he allowed the media and the democrats to define him/the response. It was a false definition but because they got out first it stuck.

The problem Republicans have is that they constantly underestimate how low the scum Democrats will go. The answer is: there is no limit.

Lake P drains slow, we saw that after Katrina. I doubt it varies linearly with height though. The Industrial Canal lock amounts to a small "levee breach" and wouldn't raise Lake P much. The spillway is another matter. Anecdotal reports have the spillway locked open, but the only published report says only that "a lock" is open. Still waiting for more info.

This is not meant for you Howlin, but for every blasted hateful freeper who is spewing all over us down here, and I would like to slap every blasted one of them silly

You sound like Mary Landrieu. I lived in N.O. for 20 years and I agree with Howlin. I'm sick of this misguided idea that no one is able to criticize the "locals" in Louisiana. The local officials didn't plan for an event everyone knew would happen. Worse they couldn't handle the stress and react properly to a crisis and provide leadership. It is pathetic they couldn't hold it together for 3 days at the Superdome.

Betsy was a miniature version of Katrina. The local officials had 40 years to prepare for Katrina. Where is the 40 years worth of water and food supplies? Where is the evidence of 40 years of planning? Not to be seen. This applies of course not to just the current local officials but all the previous ones. And those hard-headed ones who refused to evacuate have to assume some responsibility, right?

So don't hand us this liberal mindset garbage that just because you are in the Louisiana "group" we can't criticize incompetence by specific Louisiana officials and citizens. Even though I have relocated I belong to that "group" and I have no problem letting the chips fall where they may.

yep. A stitch in time might have saved the city but it didn't happen. It was corruption but down deep I think nobody ever thought this would happen. And maybe nobody would have paid for what it would have cost to have made the city up to a big storm. And the construction on those locks, I have a suspicion that was the first domino to go.

Yes, now the areas we haven't heard from are being discovered by the MSM - and it won't be good - the "dirty side" of this storm pounded almost the whole Louisiana coast and all the reporters were on the clean side of the eye - LA coastal areas will have been devastated . . .

Re: SUV tax breaks: Don't you just love the IRS and our present tax system?

Time to end the Income tax. You can not patch it.

I don't care which: FAIR or Flat tax plan we take up... we have to change this pandering system.

Which is why we who can are supposed to take care of our old and sick.

Yes. How quickly that ages old "given" has just been lost. Well, not totally - but the default seems "shove 'em off somewhere, when the become a "burden."

90 yr old, blind and somewhat addled F-I-L lives with us. It ain't easy and often inconvenient. But, it helps me to remind my self that it is mere obedience to what I am called to be as a Christian.

Keys book is an expose on just this. It is the truth, and until we as a people, and I mean the American people as a whole regardless of race or creed, face up to it and correct it, it will continue to sap us as a nation and threaten us all with internal collapse IMHO.

Well, how is anyone supposed to know what's happening in Mississippi, since the media doesn't cover it? And I am not talking about your experience with a snafu from FEMA...I am sure there are several in an operation of this magnitude.

If you have evidence of incompetence from FEMA, call Senator Lott. He seems to be doing a pretty good job of kicking tails and taking names.

No, what I am specifically talking about are public people, like Steve Forbes, who doesn't know one thing about what's going on, who got on television immediately after the hurricane and started in with the "Bush was slow to respond" canard. He was responding to the television hype on the mess at the Superdome and Convention Center in New Orleans, and by now everyone knows that food and supplies were kept OUT of New Orleans by the governor, who wanted the people to leave town.

I make no apologies for FEMA if they are still screwing things up. That needs to be fixed; I would again suggest you contact either Haley Barbour or Trent Lott.

Hey, look at this:

Some of the models show Rita come around and perhaps re-enter the Gulf of Mexico! It seems almost inconceivable that could happen, but...

Fox reported it a couple of hours ago -- seems like the emergency ops folks wanted to borrow the Fox news crew vehicles to get to the scene. Haven't heard back on Fox yet what they found.

Exactly. We take care of family first, because that is our first duty, then those around us beyond the family. I don't depend on the government to do my duty for me. For me it's a holy obligation that I accept.

I pray and do what I can.

This is how I was raised, how I try to act, and how I have tried to raise my kids.
