Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VII
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 8:01:35 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.

An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.

On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

Pretty much as I remember it. Except that ONLY Chrysler was in on the minivan thing; Japan jumped in big-time and got more from the deal.

One quibble, I think Ford still owns the "great whoppingly oversized" SUV market while Japan has just about wiped out their former pickup truck advantage.

They (Ford) have greatly improved road-ability over the past five years.

Fair disclosure: I've owned Yamaha and Honda MC's and one Toyota (on Okinawa) and will never buy a Japanese car while there is an alternate other than SAAB.

Any early reports on how the refineries at Lake Charles and Port Arthur fared? Oil rigs?

Nothing on Oil Rigs so far, but initial word is that the refineries look to have taken minor damage. That is just very sketchy information though so don't take it as gospel.

Even if they make it through relatively unscathed, it will be a minimum of 7 days from restart before they are pumping again, and restart depends on damage, power, and someplace to pump to.

I was without power from about eight o'clock last night until about nine or ten o'clock this morning. I was without phone service from about three o'clock this morning until about ten minutes after my power came back. It's still rainy here, but I hope we're through this one. My computer is making strange noises, and I may have to shut down again.

Right, my private ratio is that there are 999 good generous people and 1 bad one. And the one bad one gets all the press.

Fox News Channel mentioned that they're digging for answers to those very questions, so they might be one to watch.

Exactly, LikeLight...I am extremely concerned about Acadiana. KPLC is still of the air...and their web site has no updated reports of damage. This is reminiscent of the lack of reports from the MS Gulf Coast in the hours after Katrina...or of the lack of reports from south Miami-Dade after Andrew. I hope things are not as bad as I fear in Calcasieu, Cameron, and Vermilion parishes.

Yup and they seem to delight in doing it. They make me sick. Always some kind of spin to their coverage.

All of the N.O/ LA politicians realize that if they don't get those LA evacuees back in bondage in NO quickly that they will never return, and that will really lower their own political power.

This is COMPLETELY TRANSPARENT Machievellian behavior.

Absolutely explains the LA politicos whole situation now, and to some much more minor degree, the other Demodogs...

Which is why we who can are supposed to take care of our old and sick.

Of course, then you get into situations like mine: My dad lives near El Paso, my brother in Houston, my grandma who refuses to budge in north Louisiana, and one uncle in Fort Worth and one in North Carolina. And me, way up here in Utah.

But before I got here, I took care of my mom her last three years, and was with her when she died. And the Ft. Worth uncle keeps grandma under his wing as much as he lets her. And if anything happened to my dad, I would try to get him out here with me.

Shoot, even a lot of the younger folks who were left in New Orleans were there because they had old, sick relatives they couldn't take out and wouldn't desert.

This is the way it's supposed to work. Family first.

A lady I know who lived in Lakeview (and I don't know if she made it or not - I haven't seen her in 12 years) was possibly stuck in her house. And it did flood.

The relatives she took care of for so many years either couldn't get her to leave, or deserted her, I don't know which. I did see a note that some distant relatives asked people to go look for her, but I haven't heard more.

And that is sad.

Just switched from FOX to CNN for a minute. Interviewing military general in San Antonio and asking how soon will have boots on the ground. General said already have boots on the ground with the national guard. Idiot reporter asks about FEMA being ready or something like that, general starts to talk about how don't have coordination problems here and how things were working when reporter cut him off and went back to Soledad. Guess he didn't like the answer that Texas has its act together.

Switched back to Fox -- Tony Snow on.

Kind of the same thing with your ratio.

I didn't say there no grateful people. I object to this idea that people who lost everything are so bereft that people should give them carte blanche to behave in whatever way they want. I object that people shouldn't be allowed to JUDGE the way it was handled or compare it to the way Texas Handled it or the way MISS. or AL. handled their own disasters.

The fact is that NO does have a high degree of corruption and a high degree of criminality from the POOR as well as the rich.

Cajungirl should at least be willing to admit that is true.
And for pete's sake, Nagin should be judged from telling people to come back and criticizing the Federal goverment when the Federal Government tried to tell him it might not be a good idea with a major hurricane on the horizon.

The fact that someone has gone through a disaster does not give them carte blanche to demand acceptance of their behavior no matter their behavior.

I try to avoid FNC on the weekends, if you know what I mean. I wish Brit Hume would host Fox News Sunday also. Can't stand Chris Wallace.

"I think NO, St Bernard, most of Plaquemine are gone for good."

I think you're wrong. It's a matter of chance, but it cuts your way.

The Mississippi River drains (and offers access to)1/13th of the United States.

We simply MUST have a port there.

Ports require staff, staff requires food, food store peeps like a beer now and then, they all need gasoline, etc., etc.

In the absence of Federal rebuilding dollar number one, market forces would rebuild New Orleans on an "as needed" basis, starting with the easiest parts to reclaim. As time goes by and space gets tight, more area will be drained and rebuilt.

In this case, however, you will see a $200 billion dollar jumpstart to natural market forces.

'Taint gonna be pretty for a long while, but I bet you see some cowboy spirit as a result.
