Teaching point - A guard dog wagging his tail does not mean he's friendly. It just means he's happy in his work.

My uncle had real guard dogs. They were some sort of hybrid or combination of Doberman and German Pinschers.

Among other things only one person could handle them and that was my uncle. He also fed them some sort of specially spiced (I think it was either allspice or some cinnamon/clove combination) food and specially flavored water (I think that was slightly lemony and slightly salty). They supposedly were specially trained so they wouldn’t eat or drink unless it was prepared that way.

That was supposedly so they wouldn’t eat/drink poisoned food. Incidentally Houston was going through a rash of burglaries at the time and had one guy on the news that said he carried a pack of wieners around with him when he burglarized houses. If a house had a dog he’d just toss them a couple of wieners and he claimed you had a friend for life and the dog wouldn’t mess with you, generally.

Anyway, the old guy leased out the dogs. He’d turn them out at night in warehouses. He’d go back in the morning and round them up and take them back to their kennels.

He was either 80 or 81 when he had a stroke and was incapacitated. They had to kill all his dogs. He was the only person that had ever handled them. They were extremely aggressive, wouldn’t eat anything, and couldn’t be calmed down.

It may sound stupid, but I couldn't leave my German Shepard behind. Period. I would float out on a piece of freaking debris until I hit dry ground, before I left her behind. If I had to walk 100 miles with her, and beg for some scraps for her, that's what I'd do. She's my best friend.

I understand, neighbor, and it doesn't sound stupid to me. For whatever that is worth.

Okay, I'm going to have to re-post my PETA diatribe...:

------

"On the subject of PETA. It's longhand version sounds, so, so, benign. Who isn't for the ethical treatment of animals, afterall? (Okay, I know, there's a few exceptions here in the FReeper crowd-- please don't feel the need to publically identify yourselves here :-) ...).

What many do not realize, however, is that not all animal rights groups out there are only opposed to testing, research or inhumane treatment of animals. There are some (i.e. PETA) that believe that pet ownership is a form of _animal abuse_ and that people should not interact or interfere with animals in any way.

PETA activists are ones who write threats on dog show premiums, and who feel it is more humane for a dog to be poisoned than it is for the dog to be shown in obedience or agility or... Or even to be living in a home as a family pet.

You see, they view being a pet as demeaning to the animal. PETA activists have actually gone to dog shows and let dogs out of their crates. Their view is that they are freeing the animal, saving it from some horrible fate.

They have released minks from mink farms. Minks that then went out and starved or got themselves otherwise killed. You know, freeing them. They view milking cows as cruel and inumane. (And if anybody knows anything about cows, it would be that NOT millking them would be cruel and inhumane!)

Some were really puzzled this year about why some PETA activists had been caught having killed animals that they had taken from shelters under the guise of trying to re-home them. To me, it fit right in with their mission. To them, death is preferable for the animals than their being adopted as pets. "

I just saw some footage on our local news of the people debarking the plane in Milw. While they did not mention dogs or pets, they mentioned about some people coming only with garbage bags of possessions. However, I did see at least one doggy face at the top of the ramp.

Yay!

And let's hear it for the 82nd Airborne!!!

Honestly, I couldn't either. We have three cats and a dog, and I couldn't give any of them up.

On the other hand, because I'm hurricane-phobic, we'd have loaded the pets up and driven to high ground. I would never ride out another hurricane again.

Are the lighter colored pets being rescued more quickly?

She's a creature that would give her life to save mine. Loyalty goes both ways. It would be a cold day in hell before I left my dogs behind.

You summed it up quite well.

And as another person here said, I would have been out of there long before that hurricane started bearing down on the coast.

I agree with many other people here. Our Shepard would go down fighting for any of us, and she'll get the same loyalty in return.

Where's PETA?????

Yeah, that's what I want to know! Where is PETA, Greenpeace, and the rest of the space cadets, when we REALLY NEED THEM?

This shows their true colors to everyone that thinks they're doing something good.

I'm fairly certain that these people were evacuated from Lindy Boggs Hospital. She offered her wedding ring to take their dogs with them. They were told no, and that they could take only one item with them-- which was the tub containing the medications necessary to keep her husband alive.

They left their dogs entrusted to the care of Anethesiologist James Riopelle, who cared for 50 - 100 animals on the roof of the hospital. Dr. Riopelle refused to evacuate until all of the animals entrusted to his care were evacauted.

Most of the people that stayed, had a CHOICE to leave, and get out of harms way. These poor animals had no choice in it, they are just stranded and starving. So many people didn't pay attention and leave when they had the chance, they would have been able to take their animals with them. There shouldn't be that many people to rescue...and I'll say it again... the animals had NO choice, and unfortunately are paying the price for their idiot owners.

"If I had to walk 100 miles with her, and beg for some scraps for her, that's what I'd do. She's my best friend."

I understand that one. My boyhood dog was Rocky. The closest thing he ever got to a pedigree was when he chewed up my 7th grade dictionary and probably digested part of the "p's" somewhere along the line. Poor Rocky eventually died of cancer. I am in 60's, and I've just never been able to get close to another dog, even the ones that belonged to our children. I liked them, but never loved them as I did Rocky. Puts tears in my eyes just thinking about ole Rock.

They don't know why they have been left to die

Because the rescued were told they could not bring animals. But then again, they fled their homes without their animals and without the knowledge that once arriving at rescue stations they had to leave their pets. That being the case, I place the blame solely on the owners who abandoned their pets at their homes.......

Yes, it is very sad........

"Mr. Bennett is a liver transplant patient and had to be quickly evacuated before the storm.

P.S. -- The were evacuated _after_ the storm. They had gone there to both ride out the storm and to help out.
