I'm fairly certain that these people were evacuated from Lindy Boggs Hospital. She offered her wedding ring to take their dogs with them. They were told no, and that they could take only one item with them-- which was the tub containing the medications necessary to keep her husband alive.

They left their dogs entrusted to the care of Anethesiologist James Riopelle, who cared for 50 - 100 animals on the roof of the hospital. Dr. Riopelle refused to evacuate until all of the animals entrusted to his care were evacauted.
