Apples and oranges, imo. No excusing Blanco's incompetence, but the problems in the outlying areas are ones that we have dealt with before. Nothing like what happened in NO has ever happened; and evidently, whatever drills were run did not do much good.

but Nagin's words and tone were certainly not what was needed at the time.

And not what I expected from a Mayor. He spoke more like a thug.

Shep Smith said it best: Officials (local government) lost control at the start and never have been able to regain it.

This crisis needs DOERS.

Sit on an overpass or rooftop for 5 days without food or water, and hear politico's say 'help is coming', the question is when?

With all the $billions we've spent on local, state and Federal 'disaster plans', why isn't there better coordiation?

It seems every 'official' is expecting some other 'official' to be the doer. Too many bureacratic gorelick-type walls.

The worst thing that happened during the blackout was that a few toilets were backed up and some meat/perishables spoiled.

To be fair though, that was-by comparison-a mild inconvenience.

Even the attacks on downtown Manhattan didn't equal the magnitude of this natural disaster.

To the best of my recollection they had opened up everything from Union Square (14th St.) to TriBeca within a few months-or less-of the terrorist attacks.

On CNN a while ago their reporter was on the roof of the police station. The officers instead of protecting the public was held up in the precinct house along with their families. It was too dangerous for them to be out on the streets or in the Superdome which is pitch black and the police feel that if they went in there they'd be fired upon. The reporter didn't say it but getting into a gun battle in an enclosed space with 20,000 Innocent people would make the bridge incident in Iraq look like nothing.

If satellite radio is available to you, it is my understanding that FOXNews' TV broadcast is played live via that format. It's been a while since I thought about getting a satellite radio, but I believe that at least Sirius lets members stream to their PCs. No video, but at least you wouldn't have to listen to the Socialist broadcasts.

Mayor Nagin (D)

"How come we spent money for the Space Shuttle, and for roads in Kansas, and not here? How come we spend money on Wonderbras, and not damns around the Gulf of Mexico? Answer me THAT! People need their fix--their Horse, and Mary Jane. Know what I'm sayin."

Honestly, given the enormity of the situation, I believe he has just lost it....

Anyone with a sense of decency in the LA Government, knows how they failed in being planned to deal with this tragedy.....The Feds, although doing a much better job, still need to take some accountability in the slowness of the response.

Many at FR have come down real hard on many of these people.....but I shudder to think that if this happened in most major cities the outcome would not be all that much different...

It is painfully obvious that our country is still not prepared for a major emergency in one of our big cities....NOLA has taught us this lesson very well....at a cost that is still growing..

May God be with those brave men and women looking to assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina...

Everyone should have been evacuated.

This is one case the governor should have called the LA National Guard to State active duty BEFORE the storm hit, and not wait for several days AFTER it was over.

One NG division's equipment could have moved the majority of people to safety within one day.

"I would wager that more than a couple rescue workers will die because they push too hard because of that."

Agreed. Rescue workers are in even more serious danger from the public panic now than they would have been if the public had tried to remain calm and orderly.

The mayor dropped the ball by not appearing calm and in control whether he really is or not for the sake of the public. People take the lead from their leaders...that's why they're called "leaders". Contrast the general public reaction to the presiden't calmness and firmness following any of the tragedies we've had around the world to the NO public's reaction to the mayor. Sad and scarey.

To All,
I would Like to know why these reporters are not sharing the water and food they are getting with those that are in need. Is not some help better than no help?

"The Feds had to call this moron and make him evacuate people."

What I'm confused about is that before the storm hit, I heard NO was under MANDATORY evacuation. After the storm hit, I read here on FR that it was voluntary rather than mandatory. So which is it?

They should have evacuated the sick from the hospitals before the storm. No one down there in "charge" had any sort of plan. If I am the mayor and I know I got a bunch of crack heads in my city, I would have been on the phone with the governor before it hit telling her to ask for Federal troops to be on standby! Good grief, no one could plan for everything, but they don't appear to have planned for anything. Mississippi and Alabama had their people drive the electric company trucks and all the emergency equipment up state so it was out of harms way. Jeb Bush should have been consulted, he's been through it enough times. Look at Houston they had everything ready. You plan before something happens not after. There is no excuse for New Orleans not being ready. They are surrounded by water, they should have had a worst case doomsday plan and supplies for it. What if a terrorist had gone in there and blew up one of those levies?

I get snips on line from Fox, but does anyone know if there is a site that can stream FNC live?

Do you think anyone on your ping list can help, lizol?

"As the Mayor of New Orleans should he have not made arrangements for buses to be on standby BEFORE the storm!"

Yes he should have. If he didn't, why didn't he?

You couldn't bring the Guard into the area BEFORE the storm..and it was almost impossible to get anywhere near the city fro the first days after...

This is why Giuliani should be in charge of NO; he'd be out in resue boats or something. And considering how well everyone behaved themselves in NYC on 9/11 and during the blackout, I'm sure that the NYPD could have handled the situation without the National Guard.

Your point is succinct, and irrefutable. Moreover, you're not dignifying this bozo mayor's insults by attempting a point by point counterargument (a waste of time inasmuch as "hizzoner" is organically incapable of understanding his own disorder). What's sad is that ordinary citizens like you can make such an elegant point, while the Republicans will doubtless surrender the high ground to this nitwit, and hope that all will soon blow over. Then when the Federal relief in the pipeline finally hits, Mayor Naggin' will claim it was his "leadership" (read: whining) that turned the tide.

"Did just hear on NPR she has instructed NG to shoot to kill looters."

Yes I heard that too. I'm not defening Blanco or the mayor but would like to point out for those that don't know that the National Guard wouldn't be there to control the looting if Blanco hadn't already made a formal request for their presence.
