28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Karl Rove now can create killer hurricanes so he can enslave the urban proles? Boy, that's a lot of power...

I think that was a good question. They either ate the food up already, did not bring any or had it stolen. Which is it?

Updates as they come in on Katrina

08:14 PM CDT on Thursday, September 1, 2005

Tom Planchet

8:10 P.M. - BATON ROUGE (AP): Military helicopters on Thursday dropped sandbags into the levee breach that allowed flood waters from Lake Pontchartrain to pour into New Orleans, Louisiana's top transportation official said.

The sandbags are part of a temporary plan aimed at plugging the hole in the levee. The next part: drop about 250 concrete road barriers into the area and seal the spot where swirling waters undermined and toppled the floodwall, said Johnny Bradberry, head of the state Department of Transportation and Development.

"We'll start putting in the concrete when we run out of sand," Bradberry said.

The lake's levels have dropped about 2 1/2 feet over the past two days, about equal to the water level in flooded areas on the other side of the levee, Bradberry said. Contractors also had finished building a road that will make it easier to get heavy equipment to the levee area that needs to be repaired.

Swan Song is a great book!!!!

If they start hearing "here we go 'round the mulberry tree..." then it is time to get even more worried.

FEMA did get some airlifts in there today. but that clip of the police officer tells the true story about what is going on there regarding restoring civil order.

Once AGAIN, you INTERJECTING YOUR OWN ASSUMPTIONS INTO MY POST. Who said anything about writing off the devastation. You just made my point. Those people in MS SHOULD THANK GOD THEY ARE NOT IN NO. My sentence was very simple. It astounding the lengths you people want to go to to interject something else into it.

Once again, the people crying over their lost possessions in MS should THANK GOD they are not in NO.

Just like, I THANK GOD I AM NOT IN MS.

Move them to San Francisco or Ithica. They have the liberalism to permit looting, rape etc and write it off as "understandable".

Nurse at Charity Hospital in NO, says in the last couple of hours fish and wildlife agents have started evacuating ambulatory patients to the Superdome to hook up with a convoy.

No food, no water for anyone..not even her and her staff. There are about 45 patients left in the hospital.

Not enough food to give them. Lunch yesterday was two or three ravilios in a cup and a bottle of water and some crackers. That's it..ALL GONE.

So tell me, good people..why couldn't WE airdrop some food and water on the roof of the hospital? Huh? This is the greatest country in the world, and we couldn't do that?

"This is AT LEAST a factor of ten worse than the situation after all of those hurricanes, at least in N.O."

No it is not. Do you live here? Did you experience the devastation in Polk County Florida? You know, it got really dark in Orlando without power, too. Please... spare me the lecture.

" The reporter let this slip at the end. A Blackhawk helicopter dropped off a large load of bottled water and he mentioned that they had MRE's also."

He said some water and MRE's were dropped off that was "just a drop in the bucket"

How can we help to ensure that all these displaced people can eventually be employed in the areas of their relocation in jobs that are now taken by the illegals?

I think their old jobs (cashing welfare checks) are still there for them.

Just read an article on Fox that said they hope the water will seep out of the city at the rate of one half inch per hour.

That's the rate it can be pumped out. It can't seep out, or reced naturally. Everything flooded is at the natural water level for that part of the planet.

The entire flooded area is inside a levee "ring", and once the levee system is closed, the water can be pumped out of it.

Have a family member who works with Toyota. Received the call last night about their $5 million contribution to the hurricane relief. In addition, Toyota employees are also individually contributing to the restoration of our brothers and sisters clobbered by Katrina.

Thanks for posting this info. Please, if you have the time, post additional contribution updates as you receive them. :o)
