28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Ditto. It's been non-stop Bush bashing all morning. I'd like to strangle Bill Schneider.

Uh-Oh, I'm thinking steel cage match. State Government Corruption: LA vs NJ!!!

With the city of Milwaukee (who I nominate as the most-corrupt city; 4 of 17 Common Council members serving or having served fed time in the last 2 years for various corruption convictions, the dirtiest elections between Philly and Seattle) as the referee.

I think Delta is flying a heck of a lot of people, students, medically needy etc to Atlanta. The hospitals there are expecting an influx.

Lived from 59-64 in Shreveport, then moved to New Orleans, where I lived until 93. My dad was a 50s style Juvenile Deliquent in NO, but decided to get straight. My grandma still lives in Shreveport, and my sil's family lived there until this storm.

But I was born in OK...

With all the video of natural gas bubbling to the surface of the flood waters, I think natural causes will do just fine to burn the rubble without the aid of the locals. Broken glass in the sun is enough to get it started.

why aren't the police shooting these pickup trucks that Harrigan says he sees weapons being pointed out of? Harrigan says these are the first organized set of police he has seen, but they aren't doing anything.

A caller to a talk show said that the president has to send in the National Guard. I thought each state's was under the control of the governor, but the host didn't say anything like that. Do you know?

The charge would have to be inside against the concrete liner I would think..?? The water pressure would ensure enough blast force got directed to the concrete to rupture it.

You hit the nail on the head.

Did you hear the comments by CNN about the presidents visit.

Disgusting, just disgusting.

Here is my email to the media:

TO: CNN?MSNBC

Come on media give Bush a chance. Comments from CNN and some on MSNBC are beyond the pale. You may think that your gaining favor with some in your audience and I am sure you are with the anti Bush, anti-America radicals now populating the country. Making derogatory comments about Bush's visit is unnecessary. What are you trying to do. I think your agenda is to totally split the country beyond repair when it comes to relations between it's citizens. What the heck has CNN or any cable news network for that fact done to alleviate any of the suffering going on. You people cause me to have absolute disgusts for your fervent support of a politically driven selfish agenda.

Will CNN stop their biased coverage, I doubt it.

Liberals including the media have no sense of fair play.

Why the hell are those thugs burning their own city? They take over a useless city and then burn it? Where is the logic in that?

You got me.

They were using the much smaller municipal bus fleet in NOLA before the storm. However, all they were doing was busing people to the Superdome and other (unspecified) shelters. Not the trainyards, not the interstate bus stations, not out of town, just to the Superdome.

glad I am not watching CNN today. They were really good the other day.......now instead of covering the disaster, they are making politics out of it.

As bad as they were hit, I think LA and N.O. were far harder hit than MS or AL. In addition, their emergency response teams have been blooded recently, whereas LA has been relatively untouched, and is therefore less experienced and capable. I'm not going to be too tough on her - yet - except for not ordering "shoot to kill" earlier.

This is a disaster of epic proportions, that NO city or state or nation is prepared for.
