President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Agreed... And you should ALWAYS have HF nets to fall back on. But they are expensive, and not as much a priority as that Civic Center is..

I agree - the city & state are completely unable to deal with this. People sitting all over the place, waiting for something to happen. They can't travel far, they need food, water, shelter, medical care. They need to get out of that town and breathe a bit. But there's no ride out. Where's the busses that take 100,000 kids to school each day?
Governor Blanco must make a formal request for federal military assistance. There are particular words of art she must use. I think a proclamation of martial law in the affected areas is part of it, but am not sure about that. But federal assistance is limited absent the particular words of art by Governor Blanco. Also see post No. 406.
Same with the State Farm spokesman who told people to call and was then told there are no phones and then she told people to go on the website and was told no internet. When asked if an adjuster would be coming out she really had no answer.
Never saw so many clueless people in my life. There was absolutely no planning for a disaster. Now I can add the head of the State Police who is a woman(?). Excuse me but this Governor has way too many women in charge and I am a woman so I can say it! :)
Is her husband the Lt. Gov?
BTW, more reporters on Fox saying "These people have been ordered to leave and they have nowhere to go."
I hate to point this out, but I will: if they had LEFT when they were ORDERED to 1( they wouldn't be in the situation they are in and 2( valuable resources wouldn't be being wasted trying to get them out of town NOW.

You cut out where I clearly stated it was the official spokesperson for the LA state police that he was talking to. The context also made it clear that I was referring to her when I said 'trooper' in the quote above. She was hired specifically to be the communication front person.

You didn't read what I wrote. It was a dumptruck with at least two pallet loads of water bottles in its bed. Interestingly, later Shepard was describing the "chaos and absolute lack of help or support" as three large, air conditioned motor coaches full of people from the stadium rolled away behind him. So you can babble on about "political websites" et al, but unless you can only hear Sheppard and not see what is going on around him, I guess I can't understand your comments.

whats the downside to declaring martial law? I can't understand why it isn't done. How bad does it have to get?
