Katrina Live Thread, Part XI
Various ^ | 30 August 2005 | Various

Posted on 08/30/2005 1:34:04 PM PDT by NautiNurse

The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

No, the refugees are crawling out of the wood work.

But there is no food or water at the Superdome either. It's take your choice of poison, I guess.

There was NO plan and we are having to play catch-up.

But there was at the federal level. There was a previous article from earlier this year about how this exact scenario was what FEMA had used to train for a hurricane emergency.

I should have included some of the previous conversation, which can be seen if one follows the link to backtrack the conversation. My criticism of the administration has to do with a military official, at the FEMA news conference a few hours ago, hemming and hawing and making excuses when asked why the military wasn't getting in to New Orleans. His answer wasn't about logistical problems, but rather that the military is very hesitant to step in, that their role is to support civilian law enforcement and is very limited until requested, "posse comitatus", etc. Beauracratic turf stuff. The legal restrictions are real, but there are also legal bypasses available during emergencies.

I suspect a lot of these are drug addicts and have been separated from their suppliers and their normal sources by the events. I also suspect they will do anything and kill anybody to get drugs.

The fate of Mobile has kind of been lost in all of this, hasn't it? Think about it, had Mobile alone been the target of Katrina, it would have been a huge story in and of itself, yet it barely gets a mention.

Shep showing a little boy who is obviously dying before our eyes...dear God in heaven.

Not that he needs to be, but this whole event is going to make Shep Smith a different man. He has always seemed to be a good guy, but I can see him becoming a great man and a great news man after all this mayhem.

I think I saw a report that in one of the towns, the local mortuary was destroyed and the coffins were floating around in the flood. I don't remember if it was Miss. or Ala.

I am just going to post this with no comment:

Islamic extremists rejoiced in America's misfortune, giving the storm a military rank and declaring in Internet chatter that "Private" Katrina had joined the global jihad, or holy war. With "God's help," they declared, oil prices would hit $100 a barrel this year.

Re insurance adjuster:

I never thought about this. How would they know to come if not contacted? Even if they didn't wait for contact and went through their files, and checked every last house in NO that they insured, they couldn't do anything without owner contact. And, the place is still underwater.

Food and water is starting to arrive at the Superdome. They showed a truckload of water about an hour ago.

Overdramatic! Go and take a flying leap. They had to throw the kid an ice chip to revive him.

Take your own break.
