The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

The NOLA school buses are all underwater.

Sheer stupidity. There should have been an evacutation plan to bring EVERY school bus, state owned 15 passenger van to NO to haul people out before a Cat 3+ storm. There are empty school gyms all across the north part of the state that could have been used.

New Orleans did not suddenly drop below sea level. The Gulf of Mexico did not suddenly sprout big storms for the first time. There has been time to plan, time to prepare. The corpses fall at the feet of the elected officials in LA.

and his high speed chase to get out of there! Jesse must still be vacationing at Chavez's private villa.

Howlin I did not get the name of the place. I was kind of in shock seeing the coffins scattered about.

I am sure I saw at least 5 in the short time they showed it.

They did not say if these coffins were empty or not. It might just be from a funeral home that got destroyed.

Here's an update:

LSP Troop B is requesting immediate backup. Troopers, riot squad, and national guard. He said the crowd is triple the size it was earlier and they are about to be overrun.

The location is 610 and eleshafield(spelling?).

Should I make another thread that has events going on down there? Lots of stuff has gone on and half of it never makes it on the news or anything.

UPDATE: The SWAT team that was handling the hostage situation is going to be dropped off to assist with the growing crowd.

I'm going to pick up an audio cable in a few hours and set up a live stream tonight

And the local authorities don't even have a citywide working radio system. Is Bush the President or not? This is simply a long drawn out 911. Lincoln stretched the legal limit during the civil war when required. Hiding behind beauracracy is not an acceptable excuse.

If the rumor of the mass hostage situation at the local hospital is true, Bush is going to catch hell for not getting the military in there sooner. And with good reason.

I couldn't care less about the looting, but securing the evacuation and emergency service is the priority.

One more question and I'll leave you alone; I have missed reading where they officially "called" landfall; do you know what it was?

BTW, why is there a moat around a sports arena?

Folks are better off on that high ground than they would be sacttered about, or in the water.

There haven't been many burials in the affected areas since Katrina hit. Those are most likely old coffins unearthed by the tidal surge and flooding.

Most of the dead bodies along the Gulf Coast are probably in the debris piles of the buildings they were in when the tidal surge hit.

Are you dense? Shep has been asking everyone he can to tell these people where to go for water, etc. Should he tell them to go to the dome? They will have to swim, but so what? At least Shep would have lived up to your high standards. And Shep just gave water to a 3 year old....

I heard the Ambulance guy asking for help with the looters (he's worried about his own people being shot) and yet right after him someone got on and explained the three tiers and how this only merited the National Guard, not the Army. I think in this case we have to toss the rule book.

I've talked about the incompetence surrounding this tragedy which is going to be a force multiplier in that many who are alive now may not make it because these morons waited a) too long to evacuate the city before the event; b) didn't move fast enough after the event; c) aren't properly trained, d) the list goes on.

One more story I heard this morning from a 'Citizen Journalist' was that she was talking to the Mayor who told her (she's a health worker, I believe) that he was releasing the prisoners and she should get out of there because looting would begin with these prisoners on the loose. Better he had left them free but locked inside the jail to fend for themselves than to be out, now armed with guns and whatever, free to attack the rescuers, citizens and anyone else. This was a piece of utter insanity. Better to have executed them all and taken the heat. I would have. The bad guys? You bet. Rather than let them loose on the population now, of all times.

Utter incompetence!

The President can't just fly in LA or MS and walk around shaking people's hand. The security involved in a Presidential visit is staggering. Gov. Haley Barbour asked the President NOT to come for a visit for a few days. His police force can't sustain a visit right now.

What do you suppose the President should do today by going to LA? People are walking around the city in six feet of water filled with human sewage and dead bodies. It is not safe right now for the President to be in that city. I would say the same thing if the President were a democrat.

That said Wendal Goller just said the President would be in LA and MS on Friday and Sunday.
