The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

He needs to renegotiate his contract so he can feed his family, then. :)

The fifty people in his house

I'm afraid that people may have gathered together like that all over the state -- and many of them may have died together.

I've seen that one, and assume it is repeated thousands of places. Same sort of slick was apparant very early on.

Likely the bigger risk is bacteria, bugs, vermin and reptiles. Oh - dehydration (and it won't be euphoric) and exposure are major risks too.

Did I hear correctly that they only rescued 3000 people yesterday?

I don't know that I'd use the term "only" there, but yes, from what I understand that's about the number that were plucked from rooftops; I also understand that the 3000 number does not include those pulled off in boats.

That sounds like a GW. They have a high pain threshold.

I'd love to have a parts truck, if I had a place for it. I've gotten a bit tired of scouring the internet for parts.

Oh, and the answer is: every time you put it in the shop it costs a grand.

Citgo is owned by the state-owned oil company down in Chavez-land.

We wont probably recognize the French Quarter once the Army gets through with these thugs.

Dunno if I'd necessarily use "only" with that 3,000 number, especially not knowing the types of rescues involved. Rooftop rescues are very time-intensive, whether they're done by helicopter or boat.

You know what else I thought about putting on that preparedness list? An inflatable raft and oars!

After the looting that's happened all along the disaster belt, I think firearms and ammo are a lot closer to the top of the list than they were. :-(

If 3000 were rescued by helicopter, that will go down in history as one of the largest helicopter rescue operations in history. Kudos to those brave airmen - they must be tired.

Thank God that there is some competent leaders who can get something done. I am so mad at the effin' dingbat in charge here. I swear I will be the first one to sign the recall or impeachment petitions. That woman is useless and needs to be ran out on a rail.

I got the impression too that the 3000 figure was the Coast Guard copters... I imagine there were a lot more rescued from "independant" (for lack of a better word) means.

It was hard to comprehend the scope of this yesterday - and today's worse....

I heard the 3000 number also and thought, after watching those helicopter rescues with 1 adult or 2-3 kids at a time, that was an impressive number. (Trying to maintain optimism :) ).

I said it before, but I can't help say it again, I am in awe of those helicopter pilots maneuvering around electrical wires/phone lines to pluck these people off rooftops.

Can those foods be stored like that? Indefinately? I wonder about such things. I was just telling my husband that we need to get some water stored but don't know how or how long it will last.
