The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

and maybe SINK some of them where the levee failed too...

that was the way Romans and Byzantines made dams: float barges full of rocks into position, and then scuttle them. It worked back then, I can't believe it wouldn't work today.

(sorry I didn't reply on the thread on which you posted this - it is locked)

You know, I think we should accept that help from our enemies. Nothing like helping someone to make you feel responsible for them.

I personally know several former Station Coos Bay crew
that are in the path of destruction of Hurricane Katrina.

The Coast Guard has bases in these areas.

Coast Guard nationwide is sending supplies and crews also.

Also the Coast Guard Auxiliary in these areas are doing their part.

Also NASA-related, CNN reports that the Michoud facility on the east side of New Orleans (where external tanks are built) suffered some water and wind damage, but the water there has receded and the site is now dry. Michoud is on the other side of the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal from downtown New Orleans.

Even still, with everyone who works there not being allowed in, if NASA needs more external tanks, they're going to need to wait months. Death blow for shuttle program?

Dowell and Schlumberger could also help.
Since Louisiana is in the oil patch the resources should be close.

Just a matter of putting on gloves and going to work

Just a question that has been nagging at me. When they finally opened the Super Bowl and ordered mandatory evacuation, did they mention any plans to move the old, infirm, poor (pick any or all of the choices) or was it left up to them to get there by themselves?

TIA

OMG...

Caller on the Glen Beck show called in to say his daughter is a cop down in NO and doesn't know if she's gonna make it out alive. She says looters that are hitting jewelry stores have snipers on roofs shooting at cops that try to stop them.

gouging pure and simple....the gas they are selling was purchased before this crisis....when our nation needs us to pull together....they just feel like making a quick buck...

If true, that is criminal. When people gouge on anything else besides gas, the government goes after them with a vengence.

They had buses running around New Orleans doing pickups up until 6 pm Sunday. I assume that they started when they opened up the SuperDome (somewhere around 10 am IIRC, but don't quote me on that).
