The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

This is a great object lesson in electing women to high office. Very, very few have what it takes to get through horrors like we are seeing here.

Want to run that one by me again, "Trust but Verify"?

Diabetics will start dying today, imo.

That one hits home. My son is diabetic, and this disaster has made me think hard about the need to maintain adequate insulin supplies -- and for the importance of him living in places where disruption of the supplies is unlikely.

Most controlled diabetics have sufficient insulin for days, provided it doesn't get too hot and spoil. I don't have a good feel for temperature vs. time to spoil, but they've probably reached or passed that point in NO by now.

People are going to start dying there.

From what I've heard, people already are.

Why aren't you answering your phone?

"Information's almost as important as water right now, and they aren't able to get any."

EGGSACTLY BATMEN.

That is why I think the Networks and Cable channels are missing a huge opportunity to help!

Screw the Reporting, get info out! Real info! Locations of trapped people, medical aide needed, etc.

WDSU reporting...

Water is rising at 1 inch per hour in downtown NO.

No gas from NO to Jackson, Mississippi.

>>>WDSU reporting that some legislator said it could be 4 months before people would be able to return to NO.

Given the devastation in the surrounding parishes, there might be over 1 million refugees to house and feed for that period of time, plus once they get back in it will take time to rebuild.

We have apparently heard from Iran - something about paying us back for rebuilding Bam after the earthquake.

Japan has offered us some of their oil reserves and other unspecified aid. (Which, considering their position on oil, is remarkable.)

WDSU reporting that some legislator said it could be 4 months before people would be able to return to NO.

If New Orleans is habitable in one year, it will be a miracle.

I do not understand moving 20K people to the Astrodome. There needs to be housing created for at least 100 000 people for at least six months, likely more.

What's the plan?

Yeah, I thought that might be the case - hence the "apparently".

I said very few, not none. There was never any doubt of the strength and character of Margaret Thatcher. Kathleen Blanco is no Margaret Thatcher.

Just a general comment, it's probably worth everyone's time to re-evaluate their contingency plans. I know I have been making note of some of the issues that have come up during this tragedy and will change my plans accordingly.

Keep in mind too, in the Bay Area, there are relatively few ways out, especially after an earthquake (remember the backup we all saw on the news) - essentially all roads that dump into I-80, I-5, or I-101. Commutes alone are monstrous - it would be far worse in a real disaster.

(I live in Dixon - these things are on my mind...)
