The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.
The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...
Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Excuse me -- the main action right now is search and rescue like it is in every disaster situation. Most important item they can do is get every last person they can out of there.
The third day into this and they are just getting a command center set up? Disgraceful.
And I hope it occurs to someone down there that they have to actually TALK to each other to and coordinate.
Last night the mayor and governor were all over the place with contradictory statements.
My boss is headed there (Hattiesburg) in the morning, no phone or electric at this time. Well at least at his ma's farm.
Good news. Sorta surprised they haven't done that yet, but I can think of some pretty good reasons why.
Someone needs to muzzle the Governor and her "I Don't Know" statements.
You've got that right. She's doing a lot more harm than good here. I'd be very surprised if she can remain in office after this.
How many of the late-arrivals to the Dome might already be infected with something horrible from walking through sewage?
The Astrodome might be the world's largest quarantine center.
I can relate to that too :-)
Best of luck to her.
The mayor and gov are playing politics. I think they should be kicked aside and FEMA needs to take over command and control. Gov and Mayor don't have any sort of leadership qualities. They know how to whine and look sour. They say, evac the superdome in 2 days without knowing how or why. They complain about little sandbags not blocking the breach. They are impeding and adding to confusion IMO. Can you imagine Giuliani, Pataki, and W acting like these people on 9/11?
I agree with that, but the impression that is coming out of NO is that everything (levees not getting fixed, Superdome problems, etc) is because the city isn't getting help. That perception needs to be changed.
Someone needs to tell the governor that she can assume extraordinary powers during martial law - and she needs to start using them and commandeer transport to get those people out while she still can, instead of giving simpering interviews on Larry King that just add to the sense of impending doom.
I am not making this up. I will go get the link to prove that this is what they are going to do.
MSNBC has you covered.
Unless there's tents for another 25,000 around someplace, that's about the best plan that can be come up with.
How about they just plain muzzle the governor?
Second that motion!
According to our local news, some were set up and ready to go into operation but the flooding into NO made them set up elsewhere. Had to wonder about the thugs looting as well -- not safe to put them anywhere near some areas that need them.
Mayor and Governor are inept to be kind. Last night I heard the Sheriff of Parish of NO say that FEMA was taking over responsibility for NO.
I think we have a news blackout of anything the Feds are doing on the ground -- can you say I don't trust the media?
I am surprised too, but like you I think I can understand some of the reasons why. Like some of the anticipated command posts got hit too. I've heard some of that and other posts can't get word out yet either.
That is why the govenor had to be a strong leader and she has failed at it. The FEMA director needs/needed to really step up on this one too. Command and control really is messed up. Although it does sound like mobilization is occuring behind the scenes contrary to the poor leadership we're seeing. Several days from now things will get better.
Personally, I wouldn't want to go from one Dome to another, but in Houston, they can get out and walk around or get other places...
Plus, Astroworld is right down the street (walking distance) and I think it would be great if they would open up and let the people, especially kids get to go there free and play and just be outside and have food...and FRESH AIR!!!
That works for me -- muzzle would be good. I turned off WWL when she started her prayer service interrupting the work people were doing. She seems to be treating this like it is time for everyone to take a break throughout LA when people are waiting to be rescued.
