The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

The water is still rising, and the thousands of souls in the Superdome are still swelling.

I'm afraid that if action is not taken SOON, like getting them out or using some massive pumps, they will drown. Disease is going to be more than rampant.

I've been to Children's hospital. There are cancer patients, profoundly physically challlenged kids on respirators. The staff has to be freaking right now. Trying to keep these kids healthy when everything perfect is tough enough, try doing it in these conditions. The poor kids.

We need to get Texas, Arkansas, Georgia national guard or cops in fast. This is one case where a lot of bodies would go along way.

Why must you assume, in your ignorance, that the folks in NO are not doing anything productive?

Didn't say they weren't doing anything productive. Far from it. But, they weren't working on the levees because it was dark. Seems real lame to me.

They work on Interstate highways during the night with these huge lights. --- right.

Viewing the breaks in the levees this morning makes me think there is nothing much they can do now as the levees continue to break in more places. --- You may be right. They HAVE to get them fixed however.

I heard the same news (radio report) - busses being sent to transport the folks in the Superdome to the Astrodome.

Been thinking about this all night last night...Wouldn't it be better to just get everybody out? Surely they could then be transported anywhere in the country.

My prayers are with everybody affected by this. It seems almost as if everybody is paralyzed right now. I thought at first they were sending 37000 national guards and I thought, finally. Then I heard it was only 3700. All I can think of is those poor people stuck in attics and on roofs.

It's not lame. There's no way those helicopter pilots could safely work in close quarters in the dark.

New Orleans is a great place to visit. Short time ago they were showing that the western part of the city is now taking on water as well.

Army Corps of Engineers won't commit to days or even weeks to get these levees fixed.

Under martial law, YOU HAVE NO RIGHTS. You also cannot sue for anything the govt or its agents do under martial law.

Then it looks like it's about time to implement it.

The folks in the Superdome will not drown. I don't have the exact height numbers, but the building sits up on a concrete platform, so even if the streets around it flood much worse than they are now (2-3 feet last I heard), they'll still be dry. Now that doesn't help people that may be stuck in other parts of the city...we have to pray that the water rises no further, that Lake Pontchartrain has drained all that it's going to drain into the city, and that the levees on the Mississippi River (which is considerably higher than the lake) hold and don't flood the city from the south.

Thanks NautiNurse. She's an experienced traveler. My son has been on trips with her in the past and marvels at her preparedness (he teases that he eats better on the road with Aunt D than at home). Once when dropping my son at her house, I commented on all the gas jugs stacked and strapped on a metal rack behind the motor home. She gave me a tour of her inventory and I was impressed. My biggest worry now is that her resourcefulness will make her a target. Yet knowing her as well as I do, I fear for anyone who attempts to interrupt her quest.

They are saying on CNN right now that pumping will not do much -- considering breaking down some levees that protect the city from hurricanes to allow the water to drain out.

And this brings up another issue.

They evacuate the Super Dome and the hotels, but will the looters voluntarily evacuate too. You'd think without food, sewage or water, they'd want to leave to, but I bet not.

They'll hang around just like sewer rats.

They're going to need an armed presence on the street, that's for sure.
