The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Where do they [the looters] go?

I have no idear (sic), LOL.

I guess they're from areas that aren't inundated.

I'm still curious about the Charles and Napoleon Ave area.

I'm tempted to call the famous Upperline Restaurant, but I figure they're pretty up their necks right now.

Good luck to your friend, but I hope she is taking firearms and, if possible, escorts who can use them. The current situation appears to be so lawless that she could be hijacked or looted. I know this sounds alarmist, but being armed and prepared may prevent an incident.

I heard the mayor say another week in the Dome too. Now the Governor says they have to be relocated immediately. And after telling people to get to the Dome, they were turned away.

This is the most infuriating incompetence I've ever seen. Starting last Friday and getting worse and more dangerous each day.

I am in the distinct minority here because I like the Mayor.

He seems like he is trying to do something right here, but is working uphill against insurmountable odds.

I believe it was reported the city made the newspeople leave -- they were in the way and using up resources.

Uptown seems to have fared better than most. At least until the mob arrives.

MFH is an oldtimer here, and not prone to hysterics, to the best of my recollection.

After the first shock of it, my initial tendency is to consider this a credible report.

This mayor does appear to be doing just that, and I apologize for my harsh words last night. I'm still not sure if I agree with his advice to people NOT to go to the SD, but to their second floors. But others tell me that was probably the best advice.

I have been watching CNN this morning (yeah, I know, but the F&F crew has been infuriating through this crisis). John Zarella and Jeanne Meserve are both in the Vieux Carre, but we've only heard from them both via telephone.

That's not a good sign.

Anybody hear anything lately from Molly Hennenberg? Last I heard, she was at the Hyatt downtown as well.

All the dots are connecting to thousands being dead. Too many govt officials, from Gov. Barbour of Miss to the incompetent Mayor of N.O. all mentioning stuff about lots of dead, but too soon to bother counting, during ongoing rescue efforts.

From another blog

"It looks like New Orleans is going through something very close to the worst case scenario right now. This somewhat prescient study, written well before the hurricane, describes some of the challenges (engineering and otherwise) facing New Orleans. 'In this hypothetical storm scenario, it is estimated that it would take nine weeks to pump the water out of the city, and only then could assessments begin to determine what buildings were habitable or salvageable. Sewer, water, and the extensive forced drainage pumping systems would be damaged. National authorities would be scrambling to build tent cities to house the hundreds of thousands of refugees unable to return to their homes and without other relocation options.' The hypothetical is looking awful close to reality right now. What can be done about draining and rebuilding New Orleans in light of the massive flooding, and what can be done to prevent and/or lessen such disasters in the future?"

And we are only seeing snippets. Perhaps he has a lousy TV presence, certainly not up to Michael's standard :), and off-camera he's kicking butt. Time will tell and I expect some of his comments about command & control will be borne out.
