The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

In the middle of the night last night on some rerun I thought I heard that Mayor say they all had to stay in that Dome for ONE week...was I dreaming?

IIRC, before the hurricane hit, people were told to bring food and water sufficient for 5 days.

Those in need of urgent medical attention are being (100's have been) moved out, and I picture the dome as a staging point for transportation to dry land and outside destinations.

It is mind boggling, the sudden relocation of a million people.

That's a good point, and may well be the rationale.

Caught the beginning of CNN Larry King's show last night.

Difference between Haley Barbor and LA gov is marked.

Haley Barbour just puts it out there. Even the first day when asked what his worst fear was, he said, "I'm afraid we'll find lots of dead people."

I will acknowledge this though. Mississippi and Alabama are not dealing with the same situation in terms of water as NO. All pictures I've seen of hard hit areas of Biloxi, Gulf Shore, etc. shows that the water has run off. So logistically they're dealing with downed trees, debris, dead bodies, etc., but not the overwhelming water problems that NO has.

But once again, I can't believe a plan wasn't worked out ahead of time for a "worst case scenario." They had to know this was possible.

I agree dawn. They don't want those who have family in the areas hit, coming in to hunt for family.

Yeah the NG or someone must deploy troops to watch the backs of the rescue workers with the helicopters. We don't need these morons with their guns firing at the copters. They WANT some chaos now and might even have been infiltrated by jihadis stirring things up. Never put it past that crowd. So some pretty canny folks have got to keep their eyes open and still do this monumental rescue job. Because we can still rescue some. We have about seven to ten days (without bad weather interfering) before people start to die. Those in the attics may die before then without water and in the heat. But we HAVE TO GET AT THEM! And we can't do that with jihadis firing at the helicopters so VIGOROUS efforts have to be made to neutralize these people. Authorities must keep an eye out for any influx of professional weapons because that might mean some kind of home-grown insurgency, no doubt fuelled by our jihadis friends trying to muddy the water, so to speak. I devoutly HOPE and pray that doesn't happen but it's a possibility that I wouldn't turn my back on.

I have a friend leaving from Dothan, AL and going to Biloxi, MS in the morning. She is taking a motor home loaded with five generators, chain saws, water, and other necessities to folks in Biloxi who are in bad health, yet fortunately, have survived with their homes intact. She has asked for a passable route. I saw some links yesterday, but I can't locate them from the incredible volume of posts on these threads. Could anyone please provide me with a link to the resources with this information? Thank you ever so much.

In light of recent comments by him, has Pat Robertson said anything, er, controversial about Katrina? Like "this is God's judgment" or something?

Yes, I think so. They say they are trying to evacuate the Dome within 2 days.

No, the mayor said that on TV. I heard him. He is nuts. They need to get those people out of the SD TODAY.

Anyone watching the coverage heard anything more about the rapid water rise in NO that was being warned of last night?

It is mind boggling, the sudden relocation of a million people.

This also blows my mind about this entire tragedy. Not only do we probably have hundreds (at minimum) dead in coastal Mississippi, Alabama, and the areas south of New Orleans from the wind and storm surge. We're talking about the complete disruption of one of the larger cities in the United States. No housing, no infrastructure, no jobs. It's incomprehensible. The closest thing we've seen recently is the aftermath of Andrew, and while the total destruction of Homestead and south Dade County was bad, this may even be worse.

The incompetent governor is on now. It is a very trying time for everybody, according to her. She says they are going to try to evacuate the Superdome today. Fox is asking her questions and her answers are really vague.

And the mayor said last night on one of the shows that the people in the dome would be there for another week at least.

These people are NOT talking with each other and obviously The Plan we keep hearing about is incomprehensible.
