The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.
The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...
Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Tropical Storm 12
They need to be rolling in trucks and busses to get the SuperDome folks out.
Set up tent cities in Memphis, Houston, Little Rock, etc and start bussing them out. They don't have homes to go back to, the city can't feed or clothe them. Once the evacuees are in an undamaged area, they can get aid and hopefully contact friends or relatives for longer term shelter.
One more day of this dithering and the President will have to step in and put someone in charge of the entire relief effort. I expect real martial law or some FEMA approximation by Thursday.
Is it possible to have these folks walk to a point were mass transportation can take them to a safer place?
They can't let those folks stay there for weeks on end
whatever the number is - some movement, any movement, will give people a sense that some affirmative plan is being put into action. these people are walking onto the interstate to try and get out of there, and the beauracrats can't seem to muster up school and charter buses to move them someplace.
Last I knew, there were plenty of kids on the Dome. I've seen kids playing there, unless they are using old screen shots.
Well.. some are "escaping" the dome... I heard that people left the dome and went to canal street to loot... and I saw (on WWL) people who left in disgust and were just walking out of NO.
"I've got a waterproof 220V pump 150 feet down in my back yard. No long shaft. Power has got to be the problem."
You're absolutely right - but what of the generators? They had only less than a day of fuel?
On second thought, an earthwake on the New Madrid might not be a bad thing right now. The last big quake the Mississippi flowed backwards. That would sure help NO.
I've already seen one guy on a swampboat saving people from their homes.
I agree .. but I highly doubt the state officials there would let that happen
I agree with you.
It's always bad when it's your home being crushed.
Take care and keep up the good posts.
"Its total anarchy."
* Anarchists please take note... this is what happens when social structure completely disintegrates - people dying, criminals strong armming their way through victims and the needy. Please consider this next time you tout Anarchy as a good thing.
Well its been fun I going to do a very Louisiana thing and go celebrate life the good and the bad with the local evac/refugees at the local bar with a beer. But I am sure the discussion of how either people who dont have transport are responsible for their fate in nola or how our La govt officials are totally stupid while every other mayor or Governor in the nation could have fixed all this problems dealing with the largest natural disaster in U.S. history with a snap of their fingers and still have time to appear great on national news will continue(Probally this must be because the laws of reality, time, space, anguish must be exempt in the other 49 states). But after work and spending time volunteering today time to let off some steam. See you later tonight.
"Their garbage in now in the water, the junk yards are under water."
Add to that all of the gasoline and oil from submerged vehicles, as well as chemicals from businesses. Bacteria, parasites - it's just mind boggling.
CNN just showed buses loading evacuees in Kenner, to take them to shelters outside the NOLA area. Began loading 3 hours ago, and will continue.
Gives hope that they'll start getting them out of the Superdome after they get those who didn't make it to a shelter out of the flood zone.
They're lying on CNN again: Back to FOX.
But I am not sorry that America has had a chance to see the mayor of NO and the governor and at least one senator, mary landrieau and to fully understand how incredibly irresponsible, deadly irresponsible these people have been.
And it has been shocking to hear them speak...they sound like undereducated, childish, revolting adults who are not only unprepared for an environmental disaster (tho I would not expect any town to escape hell if a cat 4 hit it) that would have especially impacted NO with its low geographic plain, but are absolutely CLUELESS as to a definite plan to continue the evacuation and establish the location of a temporary housing camp.
I resent that our President is called upon to micro-manage a job that is this sorry states obligation...in order to save lives.
Are the these stupid, and I mean STUPID, the mayor holding the first prize on that one but followed rapidly by the governor and that landrieau nutcase who called for PATIENCE without stating a plan...EVEN A PARTIAL ONE.
Do they not know what the people stranded at the dome need to hear?
What a bunch of losers.
I wonder if they are all democrats?
If so it would explain a lot...democrats ALWAYS want the feds to bail out everyone.
And altho I know FEMA and other organizations of our federal government ALWAYS help with disasters, and ALWAYS come thru...it is sad and pathetic and apparently literally DEADLY that these state officials have not come up with a concrete plan of current evacuation...sick. They not only want the man power of the feds (ie our military already helping out), and they not only want money (which they will need and which will be made available)...THEY WANT THE FEDS TO BAIL THEM OUT WITH A PLAN BECAUSE DURING ALL THESE YEARS OF THE THREAT WHICH WAS ALWAYS A REALITY....THEY WERE PARTYING IT UP....KEEPING THEIR PEOPLE in houses built on straw.
Bet the mayor, the governor and landrieau all sleep on cozy beds tonight...they ought to row over to the superdome and calmly talk to the folks there. But that would mean missing cocktail hour.
And I did not hear one word of thanks from these three sleezeballs..I did not hear them crying out in praise of the policeofficers who patroled thru the worst of that storm, trying to help stranded people...I did not hear them praising the military there, I did not hear them building up the hope and moral of the thousands of people who are trying to help others in their city...
I only heard idiocy. From really inept people.
