The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Not FEMA, but that the major airlines should have continued with the scheduled departures for awhile longer.

"If I recall correctly, the Mayor supported the President's re-election."

Excellent. He apparently votes better than he leads.

Did anyone ask him when somebody somewhere was going to condescend to move rather more rapidly than the pace "all due deliberate speed," aka glacial, at which Brown v Board of Education was implemented, to get the frigging folks out of the frigging bowl? Is anybody asking anybody about this minor little detail?

The President has been on this for three days at least.

Lord knows I've had my disagreements with Bush. But he was THE ONLY person, apparently, in government who recognized the potential of the disaster. He acted BEFORE the storm hit when the locals would not or could not.

Also serves no purpose for him to be down there right now. He and his entourage and security would just destract from the rescue efforts.

" he's on thin enough ice as it is right now." Rubbish, the people dissatisfied with President Bush are the pollsters and the Demonrats. I WILL admit not being happy with the borders issue, however, that is not enough for many to abandon this honorable and dignified man, a leader with vision and strategy. "Public opinion" is what the outdated, left-wing media spews in their ragged, poorly worded poll questions engineered to get the most negative response they can. It's all an effort to smear a fine man. It's totally unfair to portray the President as "unconcerned" about the terrible damages to the Gulf Coast area, only the leftists in this country would even put out such an opinion, hoping it will get into the media and stick and become a major media talking point. The leftists have already started with the "Bush caused the hurricane carping"--see PJComix' post around FR somewhere...they are intellectually dishonest and plainly stoooopid people. DOn't watch too much ABCCBSNBCMSNBCCNN and ignore the left, they LIE!

A problem with that advice is that it keeps people scattered in hard to reach places if they need to evacuate. Plus, how many homes will collapse under the pressure of the water, especially after the stress of the winds.

It's probably better up north. That's well away from the major Wisconsin cities, so there might be less immediate demand. Plus, the northern part of the state doesn't have to use the same reformulated gas that we have to down here in Milwaukee. The supply is more stable for regular gas.

you think most americans are like we are here? most americans think this was just a bad rain storm - they are just going along with their normal lives.

I see Notre Dame de Prompte Secour all over it.

I would have to ditto that

If you review the storm track, the hurricane was at a CAT5 heading due north to New Orleans. The storm had sustained winds of 175 MPH with 200+mph gusts. The pressure also 'explosively dropped' from mid 900's to near 900

The eye was formed, the water was clear, there was nothing else between it & New Orleans. It was supposed to be set on a straight path (there is a meterology term I can't think of now).

But right at landfall, it weakened CAT3, & made a right bypass around the city. It then resumed it's northward path.

>I pray the NG and needed equipement to evacuate people and to establish and maintain order during it, gets in there within the next 12-18 hours.<

Amen, Jeff. They've got to get some order down there, or the death toll will surely skyrocket.

we want to evacuate the superdome by providing buses - we have been working on a plan to do that all day".

She should have asked John Kerry, he always has a plan.

"In February 1953 the Netherlands faced disaster when the dikes protecting the southwest of the country were breached"

And they have developed incredible technologies since then.

They have massive breakwaters that float up and hinge when needed. I have to believe that we are reinventing the whel.
