The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

"Those choppers should have been in the air this morning. And as for landing strips for transport planes...try the freeways...they are closed to traffic. "

"We, the USA, could have and should have done better."

You can't wait for the govt! People need to start saving themselves now. I stll can't believe the 75' wide canal feeding one of the breeches is not plugged yet.

Thanks...... I was sure you had made a report but I was lazy and didn't want to hunt.....

Now if the refineries in MS and LA didn't sustain a lot of damage maybe they can be back online within a reasonable time.

I live in Evansville Indiana...we have had steady wind and rain all day. Evansville in on the ohio river...the ohio feeds in to mississippi river, so if the amount of rain we have received in the last 24 hours is any indication of water amounts being added to mix...I would say that NO is going to have more water than they have now is just a few days....this is not good.

he hasn't done a live special address like he did on 9/11. That is what I want to see. I know he can't be re-elected, but he can be impeached or forced to resign.

We, the USA, could have and should have done better.

Simmer down, please. Every single thing you've pleaded for in your last several posts is ALREADY HAPPENING.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that JUST because it isn't ON TV it isn't happening. Most of the real story is happening without waiting for cameras to show up.

Chris, both 4ID and the 101st are ramping up for another rotation. I'm not saying that they won't, can't or shouldn't be used to get things under control in New Orleans- just that they aren't in a position right now to turn on a dime. Any assistance they do provide will have negative effects on their deployment schedule.

The water in NO will rise to the level of Lake Ponchartrain, which is about 3 feet above sea level right now.

Lake Ponchartrain is 3ft above sea level, NO is about 6ft below, so waters should rise to 9ft in most places then? Am I reading this right? How high are the waters at the moment.

So many figures going around right now.

7:59 P.M. - Mayor Nagin: Pumps at 17th street canal has failed and water will continue pouring into the city. Nine feet of water is expected on St. Charles Avenue that will be nine feet high. Water is expected to spread throughout the east bank of Orleans and possibly Jefferson Parish.
