The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.
The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...
Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

WWL TV - The 17th St Canal pump (station #6) has just failed. More flooding will happen.
Them NG need to get there!
That is excellent. Thanks for the slap! I needed it!! OK I feel better now.
"If there is a news blackout, it will be because the levees have totally gone"
Disagree. If there's a news blackout it's for complete embarassment that such minor breaches (minor when they started) weren't stopped.
There's only two breaches.
Jumping in late, but one other point needs to be made. This is a different situation than 9/11 given the total devestation to such a large area..
How this is handled from local agencies up to the feds is a barometer as to our preparedness for any type of national emergency.
As someone said earlier, the terrorists are still out there.
ATM's being broken into..guy talking about gangs looting up and down St Charles street. Remember all the movies and TV shows about what could happen when someone has a fully stocked shelter and others are in need.
You are going to see it in action here. I would have looted a gun and ammo just to feel safe in my house.
Navy sending four ships to Gulf to help with hurricane relief

The Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) The Navy is sending four ships to the Gulf Coast with water and other supplies for those hit by Hurricane Katrina, but officials are urging service members not to try to return to their military bases in New Orleans.
Navy bases in Gulfport, Miss., and New Orleans were evacuated and suffered heavy flooding and wind damage. Officials are gearing up to fly over the bases to get a detailed assessment of the damage.
Meanwhile, Rear Adm. George Mayer, commander of Navy Region South, issued a statement extending the evacuation for Naval Air Station New Orleans and the naval support base there, saying only personnel specifically contacted for the recovery effort should go back to the city.
The two bases were flooded, with as much as 3 feet of water, and there was no power or utilities.
In Gulfport, many of the buildings were damaged.
The four amphibious ships will be leaving from Norfolk, Va., in the next few days. The Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida will be a base for the relief effort.
Air Force bases in Florida and Mississippi also were hit hard by flooding and high winds.
Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi suffered extensive damage to base housing, training facilities and industrial areas from raging flood waters that were up to 4 feet deep. Flooding and downed trees also battered buildings at Homestead Air Force Base in Florida. There were no injuries reported at either base.
Army officials were en route Tuesday to Camp Shelby in Mississippi, where power had been knocked out and fallen trees and flooding had done some damage. The base was not evacuated, and there were no early reports of injuries.
The 1st U.S. Army, based at Fort Gillem near Atlanta, has already received some requests from state officials and the Federal Emergency Management Agency for aircraft to conduct search and rescue missions and assessment flights over the region.
The Defense Department's Northern Command was setting up a joint task force Tuesday that will coordinate the Pentagon's response to the hurricane.

San Jose CA? No...the price of unleaded went up 40 cents in the spot market.
"But, THIS IS AN ADDRESS TO THE NATION SITUATION."
I agree totally. This is a major disaster for parts of our country.
Hmmm,,I don't remember it. I lived at the corner of Claiborne and Canal 40 years ago and then on Canal Street near Broad. This was in the good old days.
it sounds like they are going to set up some kind of secure perimeter in the french quarter and the superdome area - but in the parts of the city outside that perimiter, its going to be anarchy.
Wife and 4 children. staying there to weather the hurricane
Not a question for you, BK, or really for anyone, but just an out-loud speculation: if Tulane does not come back until spring, what becomes of Tulane's football program? Do they play? Do they forfeit?
Just wondering (and it's a low low priority) compared to all the other stakes involved.
What is RKBA
We got a hybrid (Toyota Prius) a few years ago, and I'm real glad we have it right now. My husband spends about $50 a month on gas, and I spend $200 on gas for my mini-van. I don't even drive as much as him.
Of course, those prices will be going up now.
Maybe, maybe not. NO cops are very low paid. So they don't exactly get the highest quality of people.

I understand. It's hard to visualize if you haven't lived there like I did....I feel like I am in a nightmare.
