The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.
The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...
Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Tropical Storm 12
NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Rescuers along the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast pushed aside the dead to reach the living Tuesday in a race against time and rising waters, while New Orleans sank deeper into crisis and Louisiana's governor ordered storm refugees out of this drowning city.
Two levees broke and sent water coursing into the streets of the Big Easy a full day after New Orleans appeared to have escaped widespread destruction from Hurricane Katrina. An estimated 80 percent of the below-sea-level city was under water, up to 20 feet deep in places, with miles and miles of homes swamped.
"The situation is untenable," Gov. Kathleen Blanco said. "It's just heartbreaking."
One Mississippi county alone said its death toll was at least 100, and officials are "very, very worried that this is going to go a lot higher," said Joe Spraggins, civil defense director for Harrison County, home to Biloxi and Gulfport.
I just cannot believe how widespread the major devastation is. Looks to be from west of NO all the way to FLA. NO is basically an island at normal times, so it just further complicated recovery and rebuilding. Limited usable roads in and out. And considering how much is impacted, I cannot see how you can get enough workers into the area to fix the damage. Those miles long bridges will takes months if not longer to repair. I wonder if it will not take 3-4 years for this area to recover?
"Most of those hulls have run aground and cannot be refloated to be moved without a lot more time than they have. "
Citizens have to get anything that runs to the lake to tow hulls into the breech area.
When they pass the breech, they will snag and after a few hundred of these, the flow will be drestically reduced as smaller flotsam fills up the nooks and crannies.
I'm up further in NCentral WI, and I haven't heard of anything up here, but hubby is at work, and I'm at home.
Because the breech from the lake water will continue unabated after the pumps shut down shortly. Why would breeches at the levys in Plaquemines bode ill for New Orleans? That's the better question.
not exactly, the police have been ordered to collect foodstuffs and provisions from stores to bring them to the shelters.

****ALL RESIDENTS ON THE EAST BANK OF ORLEANS AND JEFFERSON REMAINING IN THE METRO AREA ARE BEING TOLD TO EVACUATE AS EFFORTS TO SANDBAG THE LEVEE BREAK HAVE ENDED. THE PUMPS IN THAT AREA ARE EXPECTED TO FAIL SOON AND 9 FEET OF WATER IS EXPECTED IN THE ENTIRE EAST BANK. WITHIN THE NEXT 12-15 HOURS****

And they shut down a working pump on the east bank because of rising water. This sounds terrible.
Oh, I am so sorry. I really am. I have no excuse but that is what people have been saying when I ask "who are we playing"
I am sorry.
SD?
And UNT has TWO top running backs!
The guy on Fox right now doesn't paint such a bad picture. He seems rather optimistic. Although I'm only listening with one ear. Did I miss anything?
I am mystified here.
Right now, the lake. If the levy in NO goes it's over. But I heard the same thing as you on WWL and they were talking about the levy in Plaquemines.
That is downriver of New Orleans in Plaquemines parish...
Thanks for doing it, FRiend. I remember the day when we did not need Mods. Time came that we could not have survived w/o y'all.
I salute your service - and kudos for joining in the conversation.
>This is a war zone, not a movie set.
That reminds me of something I thought of earlier today...this whole Katrina tragedy will probably eventually be turned into a TV Movie Of The Week...
Well, NO varies from about 8 feet above sea level to 8 feet below, more of less, so that remark is not exactly a model of lucidity.
"To: jeffers
Yeah, you can look at Gulfport and Biloxi and picture what northern New Orleans would look like now."
I know. The media has only got in as far as Biloxi and Gulfport so far, attention wise. Port Christian is still pretty much a mystery to them.
I'm not insensitive to what has happened on the northern shore, just glad that didn't happen in the city.
Thanks for the oil/refinery information, Dog Gone. Appreciated.
