Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

How horrible. We were fortunate enough just to lose power for 11 hours. And that was during the nighttime when we were sleeping. I cannot imagine what those poor people are dealing with.

Strategerist did research about the bridge yesterday. Perhaps he can repost his findings - which, as I recall, were slim.

Well, then let's get started. Civilian watercraft go house to house, rescuing people or at least disbursing life jackets. Transport people to designated handoff points so that they can be gotten to safe ground outside of the NO "bowl." Let the churches, etc. take over from there to get them the food, clothes, medical care, etc. they need.

Larger craft could pick up people from the levee at the Mississippi at Jackson Square in the French Quarter.

Within the day we could evacuate lots of people -- maybe not everyone, but LOTS and every person counts.

Difficult? Risky? Unplanned? Unthought out? Yes, but think "Dunkirk."

A ton and half dropped on water saturated dirt may also make the hole bigger. This is going to be very hard to stop until a near equilibrium is reached on opposite sides.

Breach in levee is 200' long. City crews having trouble getting to breach to assess damage. Evacuated diesel pumps, which must be human operated.

Areas currently under water: lower 9th ward. NO east under water. I-10 East under water. I-10 west also has several feet of water on it.

There is not enough time to go door to door to get these people to leave.

The point is, they didn't even try until it was too late to do anything but offer them the Superdome, which they were not even certain would hold up.

Can you believe that -- they loot and then swim away. I have WDSU on minimize and am shocked at what I am hearing.

Local WDSU cannot understand the national media saying New Orleans not getting bad as they thought. This lady is going after the national media -- about time. The city is crippled for a long time. This anchor said NO got it much worse. She is livid at the MSM folks!

"Looting is out of control", according to reporter. They are showing video of looters with shopping carts filled to the brim as well as people carrying items.

The WDSU reporter is addressing how the networks are reporting this like a minor event.

For now. They still will need to leave - disease will soon run rampant in NO. And it will be a lot harder to move them now.

Most small planes would have the range to fly from some alternate location to NOLA, drop items, and return to base.

Anyone with a private helicopter of the Jetranger class or larger in the area should be heading for the area with their craft. They need all the choppers they can get.

Meanwhile, WDSU just reported that "looting is out of control" and people were observed swimming in neck-high water with bags of looted stuff. *sigh*

Swimming in water contaminated with sewage and carcasses isn't exactly the brightest idea. If these folks are looting necessities, I feel terribly sorry for them. If they're looting other stuff, they may get their comeuppance quicker than they imagine.

Ya know I thinking the same thing myself, but considering it is a bowl, I imagine its not feasible

Female newscaster on WDSU (New Orleans) streaming online from Jackson, MS is expressing her frustration at the national media, which are saying that "New Orleans could have had it worse, etc. etc.," and she said that the current conditions there ARE the worst they have seen.
