From friends at ABC; Peter Jennings is near death. This is unconfirmed, but from usually reliable sources.

The ABC anchor, who was born in Canada but became a US citizen, announced a few months ago that he was suffering from lung cancer. He has not made a televised appearance since.

I suspect the article is on the website because of Mr. Jennings.

Yes. I went to ABC, saw it there and thought the same thing.

My brother-in-law who never smoked was diagnosed of lung cancer and succumbed withing 4 or 5 months. He was hardly ever sick before that. We believe the second hand smoke in his office was responsible.

I remember reading a stat that only 1 in 5 smokers get lung cancer, for non-smokers it is something like 1 in 25.

Praying that God's grace and love will surround and comfort Mr. Jennings as he faces what could be his last days.

...though I walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me..

You do not have to be a smoker to have lung cancer. We lost a very close friend from second hand smoke lung cancer. It can happen.
Andy Kaufmann died of lung cancer, around the age of 32 or 33. Supposedly he'd never smoked a day in his life.

I believe it's 86% of L.C. get it from smoking, and about 1 in 7 cases are non-smokers. Got that from a lung ailment web site this week.

Quitting is easy

Sure is. I've done it at least a hundred times.

From what Mr.FF has told me, Peter smoked in his younger days but quit (don't know when). After 9/11 unfortunately he went back to it, but I believe the damage had already been done. I'm sure he and his family have known the prognosis for a while now, but it's still going to be difficult for them.

I fear he will soon be a believer in God .... the hard way. Hope he has a chance, before it is too late.

And for those FReepers who DIDN'T have enough class to avoid the unnecessary snide remarks.

Has nothing to do with class Gabz, it has everything to do with biting one's tongue....hard. I'll not throw any mud on PJ, but I won't become part of the lovefest either. The man was a hired gun for the left, but like I said in an earlier post, I hope he asks, and receives, God's forgiveness.

I second that, SpottedOwl.
May he rest in peace. Regardless of his politics, he is a gentleman -- a far bigger man than the egocentric scumbag recently driven from CBS.

We lost a very close friend from second hand smoke lung cancer. It can happen.

It takes a different kind of person to exploit an impending death to spew nonsense. It would be as easy to prove that he did not get the illness from second hand smoke as from, say, eating egg-plant.

And there is another dimension here.
Would he be any less dead had he died while rock climbing? or saving his fellow-scientists by shielding them from an accidental chain reaction during the development of the A-bomb?

People make choices which we should respect, and we all should be conscious of not exploting anyone's death to satisfy our personal selfishness; the need to be the drama queen.
I'll leave it at that and wait for the right time and the right thread to comment further.

If this is true, Godspeed to him - and let's hope the anchorman as inherently trustworthy person (a la Walter Cronkite) is buried with him.
