Group Decries Urban Outfitters T-Shirt

PHILADELPHIA - The Anti-Defamation League has asked retailer Urban Outfitters to stop selling a T-shirt that reads: "New Mexico, Cleaner than Regular Mexico."

"This is saying that the country of Mexico is a dirty place," said Barry Morrison, regional director of the civil rights group. "Dirty can be interpreted figuratively and literally."

The group wants the Philadelphia-based retailer to get rid of all its inventory.

Urban Outfitters did not immediately return calls for comment Friday. The retailer, which targets 18- to 30-year-olds, has run into similar controversy before.

Two years ago, it stopped selling a game called "Ghettopoly" after protests by black civil rights leaders. Last year, it halted sales of a T-shirt that read "Everyone Loves A Jewish Girl," surrounded by dollar signs, after the Anti-Defamation League objected.

A "Voting is for Old People" T-shirt angered pro-voting groups.

Urban Outfitters operates 77 stores in the United States, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom. This year, first-quarter profits rose by 60 percent to $27.4 million, compared to the same period a year ago.

"Mew Mexico, Cleaner than Regular Mexico."

Only because New Mexico hire so many illegals to do all the cleaning...

Been to Chiapas, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Mexico DF, and about 10 other Mexican states which I can't remember right now. I do indeed get the joke.

Nevertheless, as Old Friend pointed out, Mexico is still generally cleaner than "Filthydelphia."

How about a shirt that says, "My Right Of Free Expression Does't Give A Rusty Peso About Your Right Not To Be Offended, Pancho!"

I was up in Santa Fe all day today, and the air was much cleaner than that! Based on my observations today, the T-shirt is correct. Too bad they're backordered.

I'm from San Diego originally. Every state has there litter problems, but they pale in comparison to Mexico.

Well the places I've been in Mexico were dirty. But so is much of Philadelphia. ("Philadelphia - America's Anus!")

"New Mexico, Cleaner than Regular Mexico."

Marginally, I reckon!

Hard work chasin' off Texan's one at a time. Our liveability index went up double digits when Squantos left and took all those ratty 4x4's with him! :)

I almost packed it in when Jerry Apodaca "pardoned" Reis Lopez Tijerina. As it is now, living here is just an everyday lesson in the theatre of the absurd.

Back in 1991, we had the newly-elected Bernalillo County Sheriff call a news conference to announce that he had just named his wife (a rookie deputy sheriff) as his undersheriff because "we have two kids in college and we need the money".
