Hollywood Worries as Decline Continues
NYT ^ | 5/10/05 | Sharon Waxman

OS ANGELES, May 9 - Now Hollywood is starting to get worried.

The poor box-office performance last weekend of the first major film of the summer, "Kingdom of Heaven," released by 20th Century Fox, made for 11 weeks in a row of declining movie attendance and revenue compared with last year, adding up to the longest slump since 2000 and raising an uncomfortable question: Are people turning away from lackluster movies, or turning their backs on the whole business of going to theaters?

The weekend's top 12 films took in $77 million, the worst result for early May in at least five years, according to Exhibitor Relations, a company that tracks box-office results. Box-office revenue is down almost 6 percent compared with last year's, while attendance is down about 8 percent, Exhibitor Relations reported.

Since 2002, attendance is down about 10 percent for the comparable period, to about 433.7 admissions from about 485 million. The decline has provoked speculation that a rising DVD market and the advent of more elaborate home entertainment centers, along with the shrinking window of time between a theatrical release and the appearance of the DVD, is causing moviegoers to stay home and wait for discs.

I know this is old, but I was too busy to post for awhile. Do you think the hollywood elites will ever understand that when you get the common man upset with your non-stop verbal assault on our president that they will stop buying your product. We don't need an organized boycott. We are just sick and tired of the leftist's trying to force-feed us their doctrine under the guise of movie entertainment. They just need to get back to the theatre and out of the body politic. They have the right to free speech...but they can't force people to buy into it....

I personally thought it was the price of the tickets...

I mean, I have a family of 6, to see a 190min movie (or more) for $8 each ( not including the refreshments and jujubees), I will wait for the DVD and play it on my home theater.

I'd like to think that would get their attention, but I'm not counting on it.

Kingdom of Heaven must be really be bad, because it hasn't even made it to the Internet torrent downloads. And that is bad when they don't make it to torrents.

I just saw Kingdom of Heaven and it was CRAP.

The Muslims were shown to be Honorable and good.

The Christians were shown to be both good and many were
crooked, lying, faithless, warmongering. etc.

Hollywood's apeasement to the terrorists.

while Christians are not perfect....Muslims are the ones
who practice "Honor Killings" "Jihad" "Racial Genocide"
"Fatwahs" They wrote the book on Barbarity. and this is not just the extreamists.

Somethings bound to happen, the local mall multiplex looks like an abandoned ghost-town.

Jay Leno's old joke calling it a communist debriefing bunker has become true.

DUH!!

The answer is plain.

Everybody has bought a big screen tv and prefer to watch movies at home on DVD.

We make it a family fun night and often invite friends.

The popcorn is much cheaper and the snorts and coughs are non-existant.

Nothing new for me. I can count the movies on one hand that I've seen in the last 10 years.

As home entertainment systems become better and better and movie theaters become worse and worse (most of them are ratholes) people will opt to wait for the DVD.

I actively boycott movies with "stars" whose treasonous actions, beliefs and comments are antithetical to my beliefs and desire for the survival of America and Western civilization and my personal well being and survival.

That and there have been but a few I would call true actors since the 70's. When special effects and blowing stuff up became the norm acting to a hiatus. This new breed of movie stars are losers and my kids act better than they do ( off and on screen ).

Well - when you cannot even find a movie to rent, something is vastly wrong. When people seek movies from the 50's in order to get a good story line, something is vastly wrong.

Who do they think they are kidding - they don't make good movies anymore.

A classic example of the danger of drugs - it robs of humanity, creativity, and makes the brain think it is superlative when, in reality, the brain is merely reacting to chemicals. Since when did chemicals produce more than a healthy brain?

NOPE /or highly unlikely....The Marxist/Left wing Nut-Jobs, have their heads, so far up their @$$e$, they'll never notice till their checks start bouncing...and then (wondering, WHY? ), they'll have to start working on HSN.

For me it's mostly the crappy movies. I probably skip seeing about 4 out of 5 movies I was thinking of going to see once I check out the viewer reviews online. By example, I was wanting to go see Kingdom of Heaven but it's got a Rotten rating at www.rottentomatoes.com so now I won't bother.

Don't worry, "Kingdom of Heaven" should do quite well in Gaza, the West Bank, Yemen, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, etc. (just about anywhere that 99.997% of the population hates America's guts and wishes us all painful deaths).

Most likely a lot of repeat attendance too!
