Yes he does and he is a very balanced man who has both toughness and tenderness. The perfect attributes for a strong effective leader. He will join his voice with other men of God and strengthen believers throughout the world plus bring more people into the flock. I am very happy with his election to Supreme Pontiff.

One analyst on cnn earlier today said that the choice of the name may be due to the fact that the last Benedict served for only a short time. Thus Pope Benedict XVI may be giving hints about the probable shortness of his papacy.

I'm not making any judgment as to the truth of the report, merely doing the arithmetic based on it.

I believe the ballots are actually counted publicly, in full view of the Conclave, so every cardinal could know the exact count. I'm not sure that the actual count is considered to be a secret of the Church.

me too! i was raised Catholic, but i am now Protestant... however, this morning when i heard that the new pope had been elected i ran to call my good friend who was also raised Catholic but is now Protestant... we were surprised at how excited we were! we decided that it must be a cultural thing...

It's a spiritual thing, the Holy Spirit rejoices and all who are filled with the Holy Spirit feel it, we are all one in Christ our Lord and Savior.

In the face of the world we live in right now, it is blindness and sheer folly to be fighting with other Christians about ecclesiological matters that are daily becoming less defensible. "Catholic versus Orthodox" polemics would be wrong even in less troubled times, but in the context of the current cultural situation they are precisely what the devil ordered. An eschatological perspective ever keeps in mind how imperative it is "to keep Satan from gaining the advantage over us;" for we are not"--or, at least, should not be--"ignorant of his designs" (2 Cor. 2:11).

I am not a Catholic, I dont consider myself to be a part of any religion...not yet anyway...I am still finding my way...

Still, I always enjoy watching ETWN, ,and always find their programs enlightening and informative...

I am happy for the Catholic Church, that they have a new pope, and seem to be delighted in the choice made....

I learned much from Pope John Paul 11, and hope I can learn as well from the new pope...he does sound like a fine man, a pious man, a man who is both intellectual and spiritual, from what little I have heard of him...so he seems to be a fine choice...congratulations to him...

I heard them on EWTN saying that this new pope, probably did not wish to have the position as pope, that he really wished to go back to his home, and return to his studies, his books, and intellectual pursuits...yet, he humbly accepts an assignment, which he probably wishes he did not have....so in that light, I am content, that he will be a fine successor to John Paul 11, a successor who will make his own mark...

True, but given the fact that he came from a family opposed to the Nazis, it is likely that he was closely watched. It seems that he "deserted" when he had the chance.

I thought Arinze would be elected, cause Ratzinger would be too "divisive." I'm happy either way. Arinze would have been harder to contradict by the media, unless they went all Clarence Thomas on him, which could backfire big time.

Seriously...you might want to look at the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) if the PCUSA just pushes you over the edge. A PCA church in South Carolina was where I came to know Jesus thanks to some wonderful teaching, and the wife and I are looking around at PCA churches up here in Richmond. It all depends on the local church, obviously, but you might want to give PCA a look. From what I've seen, they're very missions-oriented and doctrinally conservative, none of this politically-correct PCUSA claptrap.

CONGRATS!!! I painstakingly went through this thread and you were the first to post....it was actually very exciting to see the freepers leading up to the announcement.

Congrats to all for whom this is especially meaningful, from a Calvinist Southern Baptist. Look forward to locking arms in battle in the immediate and longterm future!
