Side effects after 7 days on this stuff 12/28/04 landed my mother in the hospital. She is still in a nursing home attempting to regain her strength.
30 day supply $1,980.00 thanks for the old ATT health insurance, but it wont pay for the home at 90G's a year.

Iressa?  That drug? No kidding! That's horrifying.  So sorry!  Some health insurances just stink.

That said, I hope you'll agree that smoking does increase the likelihood of a person getting lung cancer.

Well, I believe that many things can lead to lung cancer.  What about the coal miners that develop black lung?  Not all of them smoke.  It's just the pits, no matter how you look at it.

Nonsmokers Gene Causes Cancer.

The Journal of the National Cancer Institute found a gene mutation involved in the development of some lung cancers that appears to occur only in nonsmokers.

I still miss it on occasion.

Especially when I see a good looking babe light up.
I suppose that sounds sexist, but hey.

BTW, sorry about Maine Rebel. Sounds like we are all about the same age.

Oh I would really miss it if I had to quit.  Coffee and cigarettes are me. :)

And thanks for the condolences over Maine Rebel.  It's been two years now.  I still can't believe it.  He was a very good man!

Of course not everyone who smokes gets lung cancer. The primary type of DNA damage done by smoking on the genome within the lung cells is repaied by specific enzymes within the nucleus of these cells. In fact, given differential rates of expression of DNA repairing enzymes, many people probably can tolerate a lot of smoking before a cell obtains the minimum number of mutations to become cancerous.

It is also true that the studies linking smoking to health issues are observational studies that are not scientifically constructed trials. Who is going to be part of such a trial? Smokers select themselves. However, the disease rate increases are observed. If it is not the smoking then we must be selecting for some other cause that is correlated with it. Does anyone have any ideas?

I too don't like the government getting involved with the choices that I make. I hate the idea of a nanny state. I believe that restaurant owners should be able to have smoking sections. If I want to smoke then so be it.

The difficulties arrive when money becomes involved.

I was discussing this with a friend the other day.  I can hardly believe that health insurance won't pay for a nursing home.  They take the social security I guess.  But it's mind boggling that the state wants state aid over this instead of a person's own insurance.  What the heck are we paying insurance for?

So in the long run, we ALL are paying for the people in nursing homes?

Smoking isn't good for us, sure, but if a person is in good physical condition, then the changes of him getting sick from smoking is cut in half. It depends on how well we take care of ourselves in other areas.

And please, please do take good care of yourself, SheLion! You are precious to more people than you will know.

I say that, because I have another friend, who means the world to me, who is suffering with a disease called "polycythemia." It's an overproduction of red blood cells, which thicken the blood. Currently his docs are ruling out if it is the fatal type (the cause not related to smoking). He had an unexpected stroke in late January at age 46. He smokes at least 2 packs/day.

I used to get on him about dehydration while seeing him for a back injury, which can contribute to his illness (the dehydration)...He's thin as a rail, so weight is not an issue. We're hoping that it's the "reversable" type (related to smoking which does increase the RBC level)...something he can change.

There is nothing anyone can say, nag, or do to get a smoker to quit, it's pointless. It has to come from within. Why on earth these "special interest, righteous, non-smoking nazi's" or government entities think they can dictate things like that is beyond me.

It's a personal choice, period. The risks are well known.

Just take care of you :)

I appreciate that very much.  Thank you.  I do try to take care of myself.

We have known for years that smoking wasn't good for us.  And the anti's are winning big lawsuits against the tobacco company's saying that they 'lied to us.'  They never lied to us.  We are informed and have been.  It's legal and a personal choice.

Just take care of you :)

The best that I can! :)

Do the math.

not that I'm a fan of insurance companies, but paying out 90k+ per annum for every senior in long term nursing care would increase your rates astronomically.

I couldn't afford that and neither could just about anyone else.

Well, count me stupid, but it wasn't until recently that I found out that health insurance won't pay for a person's nursing home stay. And this means that the state would rather collect welfare from all of us to support the people in nursing homes?

I'm mind boggled with this. Might take a blue print for me to understand how this works.

"... the anti's claim that only smokers will get lung cancer..."

I don't know about that.

I do agree that the market should determine certain things such as smoke free restaurants, etc. I have never smoked myself, but I disagree with this current trend of over regulation.

Keep in mind that many "lung cancers" may be the result of a solid tumor metastasis such as a breast cancer which spreads. SCLC, Oat-cell,...there are many different cell types. Do smoker's or people who are exposed to other carcinogens have an increased rate? Yes. It is just common sense.

The forced smoking bans are crippling the economy.  Business's closing, lay-offs, hours cut, tips lost.  And the trickle down effect is also bad.  From vendors that supply the business, etc.  The anti's try to tell the general public that the bans are a good thing, but they are not.  This should have been left up to the business owner and his patrons.  Not the nanny's.

It's sad to see so many people hurt because of the group of anti's that hate smokers.  Now they are going after guns.

Maine and NYC have two threads running now about taxing guns and banning guns.  When will it stop?

But of course.  I totally agree. Breast cancer doesn't always spread though if caught in time.
