The UFO Phenomenon - Seeing Is Believing (Peter Jennings tonight - Live Thread)
ABC News ^ | Feb. 24, 2005

Posted on 02/24/2005 3:55:40 PM PST by traumer

Almost 50 percent of Americans, according to recent polls, and millions of people elsewhere in the world believe that UFOs are real. For many it is a deeply held belief.

For decades there have been sightings of UFOs by millions and millions of people. It is a mystery that only science can solve, and yet the phenomenon remains largely unexamined. Most of the reporting on this subject by the mainstream media holds those who claim to have seen UFOs up to ridicule.

On Feb. 24, "Peter Jennings Reporting: UFOs — Seeing Is Believing" takes a fresh look at the UFO phenomenon. "As a journalist," says Jennings, "I began this project with a healthy dose of skepticism and as open a mind as possible. After almost 150 interviews with scientists, investigators and with many of those who claim to have witnessed unidentified flying objects, there are important questions that have not been completely answered — and a great deal not fully explained."

"Peter Jennings Reporting: UFOs — Seeing Is Believing" airs Thursday, Feb. 24 from 8-10 p.m. ET on ABC. The program will be broadcast in High Definition.

This two-hour primetime special reports on the entire scope of the UFO experience — from the first famous sighting by Kenneth Arnold in 1947 to the present day. The program draws on interviews with police officers, pilots, military personnel, scientists and ordinary citizens who give extraordinary accounts of encounters with the unexplained. Also included are the voices of professional skeptics about UFOs, including scientists who are leading the search for life forms beyond Earth elsewhere in the universe.

The program explores the facts behind the enduring mystery of the incident at Roswell, N.M., and looks into the strange stories of alien abductions. Among the UFO cases presented:

Minot Air Force Base, N.D., October 1968 — Sixteen airmen on the ground and the crew of an airborne B-52 witness a massive unidentified object hovering near the base.

Phoenix, March 1997 — Hundreds witness a huge triangular craft moving slowly over the city.

St. Clair County, Ill., January 2000 — Police officers in five adjoining towns all independently report witnessing a giant craft with multiple bright lights moving silently across the sky at a very low altitude.

Today if you report a UFO to the U.S. government you will be informed that the Air Force conducted a 22-year investigation that ended in 1969 and concluded that UFOs are not a threat to national security and are of no scientific interest. But as one of the world's leading theoretical physicists says in the program, "You simply cannot dismiss the possibility that some of these UFO sightings are actually sightings from some object created by … a civilization perhaps millions of years ahead of us in technology."

"Peter Jennings Reporting: UFOs — Seeing Is Believing" is produced by PJ Productions and Springs Media for ABC News. Mark Obenhaus and Tom Yellin are the executive producers.

Yawn, waiting for dad to get home to watch mother before I can take a nap . . .

Hey, JM, You are as much a genius as about anyone hereon.

I just think the task you have set for yourself of reading so much of this is . . . a very tedious sort of task. I'm humbled and honored that you'd bother.

I believe it's important for Christians to be aware of something that I think is going to really jangle sensibilities when it surfaces wholesale. And, I think it has implications for end times biblical prophecies.

However,

those walking close to God and fearing ONLY displeasing HIM will find HIM THE HIGH TOWER and protected under His 'wings.' There will be NO other safety.

And all the disinformation, hoax, lies etc. from the father of lies directly and through ET's will EVENTUALLY crash and burn. But those not walking close to God will be deceived to their own hurt--and too often, probably, their own eternal hurt.

Only God's Word will end up flawlessly true. We can depend on it.

I've often imagined myself in several situations being challenged with the hoax stuff about man's creation, spiritual truths etc. and just repeatedly hear myself quoting back from Scripture:

IT IS WRITTEN . . . whatever verse fits that situation.

But we need to hide it in our hearts and imprint it on our whole being for such a time.

Blessings, peace, health and rest to you this day.

LUB,

mdmathis6 you said,

'Lewis wrote of a mystic who had a dream in which Jesus appeared with an object in his hand the size of a walnut. She asked what the object was and he replied..."All that has ever been created ....!"

'We puny things look into the big universe and say" how large and complex, how much power it must have taken, eyada eyada!" I tell you from God's perspective, it was merely the power of a single thought, a small gesture of measured command..."Let there be Light!"

'But to let his son be butchered by us puny things, now that did take some effort on his part to express such "brokenness of heart towards us"!

'To create a universe is nothing for God, to experience death for us thru his Son Jesus Christ cost him everything he had, in as much as God could give it and have all material creation survive with-out being unmade!'

End quote.

Well put mdmathis6. Thanks be to God.

Wait a second, Quix, you just said,

'Hey, JM, You are as much a genius as about anyone hereon.'

Speak for yourself, my friend.

I would like to point out that there are any number of us here in FreeperVille who aren't geniuses (genices?), and we fall into the categories of

1. not being a genius but seeing oneself as a genius,
2. not being a genius and being unable to recognize those having that status in our midst,
3. not being a genius and being aware that one is not such,
4. not being a genius and having the good sense to shut up and listen for a change and maybe learn something from the brightest and best, and realize we are privileged to have access to those here in FreeperVille.

. . .
Now, there are those of you in FreeperVille who really are brilliant enough to qualify as being geniuses, and you fall into similar categories of your own, but I won't enumerate them right this moment.

As I did say a little while ago, thank you, Quix, for always being helpful and never having the attitude "Ha Ha I am smarter than you".

Nuff said.

I take exception to your characterization of mdmathis6's post #796.

Neither the Lord Jesus Christ nor His Father, is an inanimate object, nor an animal, nor a natural phenomena, so in no way are those comments "anthropomorphic".

I suggest you go to

www.yourdictionary.com

and refresh yourself on the use of such a term.

Hi Jocko,

The fig tree prophecy is Matthew 24:32. You have to read the whole chapter to get the context of the line. The fig tree is symbolic of Israel. Here is a good page on it:

Rapture Link

I do question if Israel is "reborn" without its temple. So has the clock started yet ?

The web is full of "enthusiastic" Christian sites that say it has, but I think they see what they want to see. Does not mean they are wrong, but it does mean they are biased.

I consider myself a Christ follower. I read his words, and follow Him. Christ gave us the parable, so it will be fulfilled PERIOD. But even He did not the exact day and time.

I don't know where you stand in Christ, so I will warn you to take it slow with the end times prophecies. The text is downright frightening for unbelievers.

I say and believe the Nicene Creed, do you?

"I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

"I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven: by the Holy Spirit He became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scripture; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.

"I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son He is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen."

Hi FH,

Thanks for writing back and giving a Bible verse as a reference. Will take a look. I am a believer. I do watch and pray for the Lord's return and try to be ready for that with as little notice as the twinkling of an eye.

OTOH, if He tarries, I hope to live out my life serving Him, serving the church, and serving my fellow man with mercy and with love. By His grace.

The Scripture I have been most blessed by this week is Philippians 4.

Thanks again for writing. God bless.

To: Fish Hunter; All

Philippians 4
1 Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved. ... 4 Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.

6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy -- meditate on these things. 9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.

10 But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at last your care for me has flourished again; though you surely did care, but you lacked opportunity. 11 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: 12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

14 Nevertheless you have done well that you shared in my distress. 15 Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only. 16 For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for my necessities. 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account. 18Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God. 19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. 20 Now to our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.

21 Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brethren who are with me greet you. ... 23 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

I owe you an apology chemainus!

Just now, it's occurring to me that your use of the term anthropomorphic was due to the C.S. Lewis image of the Lord Jesus holding an !!!object!!! the size of a walnut.

LOL. I am extremely sorry to have wrongly and over-reacted to you.

See, I said I'm no genius.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. The first thing that came to mind when I saw this article was the media's behavioral pattern in which they'll handle significant breaking news that they really don't want to talk about by ignoring it, and to create a substitute story they'll grab hold of some canned subject matter (like ufology), add two cups water, and stir.

That need not be the case here. It could have been an honest-to-goodness slow news day, but being the skeptical type I thought I would put forth the idea as food for thought.

Thanks.

I think I understand!

Certainly the media is complicit in a list of ways in our society . . . with . . . dark forces.
