Animal-Human Hybrids Spark Controversy
National Geographic ^ | January 25, 2005 | Maryann Mott

Scientists have begun blurring the line between human and animal by producing chimeras—a hybrid creature that's part human, part animal.

Chinese scientists at the Shanghai Second Medical University in 2003 successfully fused human cells with rabbit eggs. The embryos were reportedly the first human-animal chimeras successfully created. They were allowed to develop for several days in a laboratory dish before the scientists destroyed the embryos to harvest their stem cells.

In Minnesota last year researchers at the Mayo Clinic created pigs with human blood flowing through their bodies.

And at Stanford University in California an experiment might be done later this year to create mice with human brains.

Scientists feel that, the more humanlike the animal, the better research model it makes for testing drugs or possibly growing "spare parts," such as livers, to transplant into humans....

What about the genetically modified bacteria which make human insulin - are those "monsters"?

Those "monsters" keep my 9 year old son alive.

If researchers were able to create a pig pancreas that was human enough that it would not be rejected, we would jump at the chance to have it implanted. Assuming trials showed it to be safe.

Precisely my point. I had three diabetic grandparents and two diabetic parents - I know at some point I will become insulin-dependent. But where do we draw the line between "acceptable" and "unacceptable" biomedical research? I don't think that these transgenic creatures are at all a problem; some people do.

But where do we stop..? Do we go back to treating disease by Age Of Faith means?

Right or wrong, somebody is going to do this and let one be born. Will this creature have a human soul?

I'll pass this transplant opportunity up, thanks!

Don't want anything attached to my body that was
originally nourished by the blood/digestive system
of my pet dog...I love her, but there IS a limit to
my symbiosis tolerance!

"In Minnesota last year researchers at the Mayo Clinic created pigs with human blood evercleer flowing through their bodies." Which explains Ted Kennedy

"And at Stanford University in California an experiment might be done later this year to create mice humans with human mice brains." Already been done. Barbara Boxer.

Moral Absolutes Ping.

More on the "chimeras" - the attempts of mad scientists to make earth a hell, here and now. The desire to usurp God's supremacy, if unrestrained by any moral absolutes, leads to the worst hell anyone could imagine.

Technology is only as good as the people weildiing it. It's like fire or knives - can warm and cook, or kill and destroy.

Let me know if anyone wants on/off this pinglist.

Forget ethics -- this piece is far more troubling than Global Warming every could be! These wonks go and create some hybrid, which mutates some innate, but inert viral signature into a lethal killing machine. The bug that caused the 1918 WW Influenza Pandemic, to the best of my knowledge, has never be identified with certainty; believe is that it was a mutated bug from pigs that jumped to humans.

One "whoops" and it could be goodnight for many :~|
