It's called "whistling past the graveyard". Even if it's over the top sometimes, I can understand the motivation.

But meanwhile, no, this isn't a hoax. It's only a matter of time before someone lets a true animal-human hybrid out of the lab (if it hasn't happened already). My bet is on a mouse with a human brain. We're obviously not prepared to deal with the ethical fallout from that type of situation, but we'd better GET prepared.
