WASHINGTON - Tomorrow night, with the nation's capital awash in inaugural events, Sen. Hillary Clinton will be delivering a high-profile speech in Boston about politics and youth. She is the keynote speaker at a fundraiser for a group headed by outspoken Boston minister, Rev. Eugene Rivers.
Aides to Clinton, a possible Democratic presidential contender in 2008, said she agreed to give the speech a long time ago and said nothing should be read into the timing.

She couldn't recall.
No wonder it's 4 degrees right now in my area of MA, the frigid witch is in town.
LOL!
The success in reducing youth violence in Boston, coupled with Rivers outspokenness, has made him quite the media darling in recent years, in part because he says things that White people would be zapped for saying publicly. He landed on the cover of Newsweek in June 1998 and was hailed as a "Savior of the Streets." Rivers said all the attention from the Newsweek "coronation" got him into a lot of hot water with fellow preachers especially those who were not mentioned in the article. Since then, the phone has been ringing steadily. Al Gore invited him to his annual "Family Reunion" in Tennessee. The Ford Foundation featured him on the cover of its magazine. Italian TV is doing a piece, as is Der Spiegel, a popular German newsmagazine.
When Clinton aides say "nothing is to be read into" something, it's time to read plenty into it. Where they're concerned, when they say it's sunny, carry an umbrella.
Inevitably most local black leaders get bought out by the political machine in Boston and become vote pimps. This guy is smart and different. The fact that he'd have the witch in for the inauguration says alot about him trying to do a good job for his flock. The local pols will be swarming him for seats.
Between he and Hillary, I guess what I want to see is who's using who the most. It's looks like algore has already tried what she is trying.
Rev. Rivers sees this as a moment for African-Americans to exploit with a new president who needs friends and who will turn his attention to people who reach out to him - that Bush will ignore people who are out in the street protesting.
He disagrees with Bush on a lot of key issues, but he feels that's irrelevant right now.
He says Bush will be the next president and that it's time for African-Americans to not be perceived as what he called "genetically Democratic." He says that has led them only down a blind ally.
If this entire week, he said, is a lot of protests and marching around, then the Bush administration is going to look the other way.
hillary! gearing up for 2008.
Clinton will probably steer clear of one of the major preoccupations of Rivers and much of the local black clergy their continuing opposition to same-sex marriage. In their view, the fact that most black legislators support it only highlights the gap between the politicians and their supposedly more conservative supporters. I've said before and say again that the politicians took the high road in the debate; clergy believe they ignored the beliefs of the people they represent. It's one still-simmering debate that shows no sign of resolution.
To Rivers, it goes to a larger issue. Ever the diplomat, he argues that politicians have contributed little of substance to political debate.
Whether Rivers's innate pragmatism and Clinton's ambitions are compatible is anyone's guess. But a table with the two of them will be an interesting place.
"The elite media thinks the only black political stories are Barack Obama, Jesse Jackson, and Al Sharpton," Rivers said. "Meanwhile, 23 million black church-attending folks are making independent decisions about what they think is important."

nothing should be read into the timing
Are they saying she wanted the attention on herself even if sKerry was getting sworn in?
While Bubba was busy at the oval office sink she was always in Boston at one thing or another for the children. She'd probably then go stay out in burbs with the Solomonts or Friedman. She's laying the groundwork in Kerry's backyard.
Gene is collecting money at the door.
Good catch. Guess we'd have to know the meaning of, "a long time ago."
Too bad wishin' she'd go away doesn't work.
"Good grief, does Jesse Jackson know what hillary! is up to?
hillary! gearing up for 2008."
