SpongeBob, Barney promote 'gay tolerance (FedEx to Sponsor in Gov't Schools)
WorldNetDaily ^ | January 6, 2005

In a new video to be distributed to 61,000 schools across the nation, homosexual activists are using popular children's TV characters such as SpongeBob SquarePants and Barney the dinosaur to surreptitiously indoctrinate young children into their lifestyle, a pro-family activist group charges.

SpongeBob Squarepants is one of the popular children's TV characters appearing in a new 'tolerance' video.

Based on the 1970s hit song "We Are Family," the video will be distributed to public and private elementary schools nationwide March 11, along with lesson plans for teachers, points out the American Family Association.

The distribution, sponsored by FedEx, will coincide with the video's broadcast March 11 on Nickelodeon, PBS, and the Disney Channel in celebration of the proposed National We Are Family Day.

AFA researcher Ed Vitagliano sees the project as an "open door" to a secondary discussion of homosexuality, noting the the foundation has a "tolerance pledge" on its website that children and others are encouraged to sign, which includes sexual orientation. [Editor's note: This story previously linked to the website of a group that has the same name but no connection to the video. WND regrets the error.]

"While we want everyone to respect other people's beliefs, we do not consider it appropriate for children's television to be used in an effort to indoctrinate children to accept homosexuality," he said.

Vitagliano says the foundation is employing a bait-and-switch approach, with popular children's figures such as Arthur, Dora the Explorer, JoJo, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Big Bird and Bob the Builder.

The objective is to get children to the foundation's website "and there they're given the full pitch about homosexuality," he said.

Video producer Christopher Cerf called the video an "unprecedented event."

"For the first time characters from all of the important kids shows came together to appear in the same video," he said in a November news release. "The producers and performers from each show embraced the spirit and message of this project."

The We Are Family Foundation was founded by singer-songwriter Nile Rodgers, who wrote the hit song recorded in 1979 by Sister Sledge.

The video was financed by a grant from the Toni Mendez Shapiro estate.

"Cooperation and unity are the most important values we can teach children," Rodgers said. "We believe that this is the essential first step to loving thy neighbor."

The We Are Family Foundation says its partners in the production are the Anti-Defamation League, Crown Theatres, Disney Channel, FedEx, Nickelodeon, HIT Entertainment, Nile Rodgers/Sony Publishing/The Bernard Edwards Estate/Warner Chapel, Nelvana, PBS, Scholastic, Sesame Workshop, Toni Mendez Shapiro Estate, and WGBH-TV in Boston.

A Federal Express spokesman said the company is "proud" to provide shipping for the project.

"Promoting diversity is part of our corporate culture at FedEx," said William G. Margaritis, senior vice president, worldwide corporate communications.

Characters appearing in the video are from award-winning shows including "Arthur," "Barney," "Bear in the Big Blue House," "Between the Lions," "Blue's Clues, Bob the Builder," "The Book of Pooh," "Clifford the Big Red Dog," "Dora the Explorer," "Jimmy Neutron," "JoJo's Circus," "Kim Possible," "Lilo & Stitch: The Series," "Little Mermaid," "Madeline," "The Magic School Bus," "The Muppet Show," "The Proud Family," "Rugrats," "Sesame Street," "SpongeBob SquarePants," and "Zoom."

The video also features cameo appearances by entertainers Bill Cosby, Diana Ross and Whoopi Goldberg.

IT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAT THE KID UNDERSTAND RIGHT AND WRONG BEHAVIOR THAN THAT THE KID BE TOLD TO RESPECT PERVERSITY.

Absolutely and worth all caps. Trusting naive children MUST be protected. Jesus Himself said those who would pervert these little ones should have grindstones tied around their neck and be cast into the sea. DROWNED. EXECUTED. DEATH PENALTY. Garbanzo, on which side of this issue ARE YOU???

"Personally I don't see much that's wrong with this"

It is called incrementalism --- just a little bit here - aww, well that's not too bad. We'll ignore this.

Next time --- well, it's only a tiny bit more - no problem

Last one ---- Seig Heil! You Will go into that closet with your Master, Judge Homo right this instant! Lawyer Nambla-Bob will observe.

Yeah --- no problem when it's just a little bit at a time .....

Bad move on trying this stunt

Very bad move; if my kids were still in elementary school, I'd do what I've had to do before.....demand that my child NOT participate in this program and have them placed into another classroom teaching something else during that time period. I only wish more parents would do so.

I personally get so sick and tired of the gay/lesbian/transgendered/extremely confused gang and agenda hijacking icons such as these.

Whoever is at the top of the gay society is bound and determined to get the gays totally accepted. There will be no giving up on their part.

And it's been going on for years.

Remember the old Dark Shadows soap in the late 60's? Barnabas, the main character, had a secret he had to hide (he was a vampire). He tried to "fit in" with his new found family, after being locked up in a coffin for almost 200 years.

When I started watching the re-runs again a few years ago, I really got hooked on the show again. What surprised me then (but not now, as I look back at it) was just how much of a gay following that show had! To be honest, after talking to, and meeting many of the fans (and people involved with the fan clubs still going on), I was in the minority as being straight.

And I once got chastised by private email when I quoted another poster's comments on a message board when they referred to one of the actors as "a poof." (the actor was openly gay.)

Isn't anything sacred anymore? A silly old soap opera, cartoon characters...anything?

Not sure if you pinged out this article about the "tolerance" indoctrination for kids. Supported by Fedex, too.

There's info about the "resource" materials for teachers that's very revealing, if you haven't seen it yet.

What's going to happen is that now, when they see SpongeBob and Patrick holding hands and skipping...

...instead of seeing young friends together, these indoctrinated kids will think SpongeBob and Patrick are gay.

Great...way to go, FedEx. Guess UPS will get my business from now on.

Agree on that.

But, are you inferring that these people, if not taught to "tolerate" in a small way, would have the actual desire harm someone who is gay, but wouldn't, because they "respect life?"

I'm not sure I understand your point here.

(but that's okay, I'm barely on cup #2 :)

Isn't anything sacred anymore? A silly old soap opera, cartoon characters...anything?

When we were growing up, we were taught right from wrong.

Now, all those things have changed. What is right is now wrong. What was wrong is now right, and I just can't do a complete 180 and embrace all of these changes.

I just read, watch, listen and shake my head. And pray.

My complaint is using popular cartoon characters or objects such as candy to manipulate ro entice children.

Remember the liberal outcry about Joe Camel? Where is that outcry now? All liberals are hypocrites.

"pondered the existence of god,"

Anybody who does not capitalize 'God' isn't going to reach any OTHER conclusions that will be honoring to either God, orthodox Jews or Christians....

No one has ever given a proper explanation of how our differences are our strength.

Having different points of view and the freedom to express and act on them is really what has made this country great. It is what has prevented this country from becoming the Middle East where nothing has changed in centuries. It really is our creative tension which has propelled our country forward. It is our ability to accept new ideas and our willingness to change the status quo that helped us lead the world in technological and social development.
