ATHENS, Nov 19 (Reuters) - A group of Greek lawyers are threatening to sue Warner Bros film studios and Oliver Stone, director of the widely anticipated film "Alexander," for suggesting Alexander the Great was bisexual.
The lawyers have already sent an extrajudicial note to the studio and director demanding they include a reference in the title credits saying his movie is a fictional tale and not based on official documents of the life of the Macedonian ruler.
"We are not saying that we are against gays but we are saying that the production company should make it clear to the audience that this film is pure fiction and not a true depiction of the life of Alexander," Yannis Varnakos, who spearheads the campaign by 25 lawyers, told Reuters on Friday.
Stone was quoted on the MSNBC.com Web Site as telling the upcoming edition of Playboy magazine that the film's depiction of Alexander could offend some.
"We go into his bisexuality. It may offend some people, but sexuality in those days was a different thing," he was quoted as saying.
While the film starring Colin Farrell and Angelina Jolie will be released on Nov. 24, Varnakos said he has already gathered enough information regarding the content of the movie to suggest there are "inappropriate references."
"We have not seen the film but from the information we have already there are references to his alleged homosexuality, a fact that is in no historical document or archive on Alexander," he said. "Either they make it clear that this is a work of fiction or we will take the case further."
This is not the first time Greeks have been angered by suggestions Alexander was homosexual and had affairs with young men.
Two years ago hundreds of northern Greeks from the province of Macedonia, where he was born, stormed an archaeological symposium after one speaker presented a paper on the homosexuality of Alexander. Police were called in to evacuate the participants.
One of the greatest military leaders of all time, Alexander, who was never defeated in battle, conquered about 90 percent of the then-known world before his mysterious death at the age of 32, building an empire that stretched from the Mediterranean to Afghanistan.
Varnakaos said as Stone has the right to freely express himself, the audience should have the right to know.
"We cannot come out and say that (former U.S.) President John F. Kennedy was a shooting guard for the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team and so Warner cannot come out and say Alexander was gay," Varnakos said.
This is nothing more than more homosexual agenda BS to claim the dead. The homosexual also gloss over the fact that in Alexander's time homosexual behavior was a choice not a "born" thing. ("born" homosexual is a phenomenon of the last century)
It is worth noting:
-Oliver Stone was IN Greece and refused any research assistance.
-The suit is only for a blurb at the start of the film. Remember they did it for the godfather.
-In fairness there are reviews online that say there is no overt homosexual acts just looks. Whatever that means. (the reviews also said the movie was terrible but that is their opinion)

"Two years ago hundreds of northern Greeks from the province of Macedonia, where he was born, stormed an archaeological symposium after one speaker presented a paper on the homosexuality of Alexander. Police were called in to evacuate the participants. "
It was not just alexander, the paper presented tried to suggest King Philip had homosexual behavior and implied alexander was a target.
I think there's a big push to shove the "gay" agenda into everyone's faces right now. I've noticed several drama shows on teevee taking up the banner--Thursday's CSI was one, and last Sunday Cold Case was just plain obnoxious. This movie is more of the same, except you have to pay for the dubious privilege.
Who has seen this latest Oliver Stone turkey? No one has been talking about it, so I suppose this is a lame attempt to get people to see it out of puerile curiosity.
I would think the fact that Oliver Stone is connected to the movie is proof enough to anyone that the movie is a total fabrication, completely divorced from reality.
It seems the DNC talking poing of re-educating the red states to accept homosexual behavior has been taken literally by hollywood.
...and the suits wonder why men don't watch broadcast TV.
I'm sure this article is going to have a hugh impact on us! /sarcasm
true.
You would think the Marriage of Alexander to a women who became the love of his life would have been a love story to focus on. However there is no morbid conspiracy or controvers for stone to hang his ego.
I had always read that Alexander was gay as hell. Still wont go see the movie.
only in the last 50 years has there been that push.
There has NEVER been the case when studing the history of Alexander the Great AT THE SOURCE.
Oliver stone is reason enough not to see this turkey.
< I would think the fact that Oliver Stone is connected to the movie is proof enough to anyone that the movie is a total fabrication, completely divorced from reality. >
I agree. Who in the world doesn't know that OS makes fiction of factual history?
Homosexuality was traditionally a dominance behavior, as it still is among animals. One of the things that was done first by Judaism (which rejected homosexuality and polygamy) and then by Christianity was to free us from biological determinance.
Even the ancient greeks considered homosexuality a choice of perversion.
""We cannot come out and say that (former U.S.) President John F. Kennedy was a shooting guard for the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team..."
Why can't they? Of course they could. If people are stupid enough to believe a cinematic rendition of history with no independent research, that's their loss.
I like movies, and I have somewhat wacky taste, but cripes, I don't believe much of what I see.
And BTW, I was *real* disappointed to see this was an Oliver Stone deal. His movies are so beyond the pale and agenda driven I quit going to see them.
I doubt if he was actually bisexual, but in those days all the Greeks were trying to enlarge the circle of their acquaintances.
"Thursday's CSI was one..."
I saw that episode as extemely ANTI the radical agenda of those who think mutilating their bodies is an Ok thing to do. I don't think it really had much to do with being homosexual, after all anyone who was a homosexual would not want to "become" a member of the opposite sex. Being homosexual is one thing, having one's genitals removed or changed is really mental illness, I have no idea why it's not a crime. I thought CSI did a good job of portraying those involved in such things as either unfortunate victims or evil perpatrators. I was also struck by how the Lindsey Crowse character had spent years doing abortions. Ok, I grant they said "illegal" abortions, but it was not portrayed as a good thing to be doing.
even only as far back as the turn of the century, letters between normal friends can be misinterprited to comply with the homosexual agenda.
Was patton a poof because he cried in front of eisenhower? I think not.
For the Godfather there was a "italians are not evil, this is just a movie."
This is not inconsistent with leaving the oliver stone content untouched and simply putting a "this is a work of fiction and did not make reference to historical documents".
