Kerry Losing Ground Among White Catholics
Beliefnet.com ^ | Steven Waldman

Posted on 10/10/2004 10:23:40 PM PDT by Recovering_Democrat

Could the first Catholic presidential nominee since 1960 lose the election because of the Catholic vote?

Even as Kerry is drawing closer to Bush in general, he is falling farther behind among one surprising and crucial group: white Catholics.

According to a Pew study released Monday, President Bush now leads among white Catholics 49% to 33%. That represents further growth from Pew's September 28 poll which had it at 49% to 39%.

The candidates had been roughly even until August, when Bush began to pull ahead, according to Luis Lugo, director of the Pew Religion Forum. Significantly, Bush won the white Catholic vote by 7 percentage points (he lost the overall Catholic vote, which includes Hispanics, by 2%).

In other words, if the election were held today and reflected these polls, Bush's victory margin among white Catholics would be twice as large against Kerry--the first Catholic major party presidential nominee since 1960--than against the Baptist Al Gore.

This is extremely bad news for Kerry because white Catholics are disproportionately represented in several battleground states with large Catholic populations: Pennsylvania (30%), New Jersey (45.9%), Ohio (28%), Michigan (28%), Wisconsin (34.4), Minnesota (28.7%) and New Hampshire (38.2%).

Kerry has said he plans to give a major speech on his Catholic faith and how it shapes his values "somewhere in the course of the next month."

For Kerry to be doing this badly among Catholics, it most likely he means he's losing not only conservative Catholics but the far larger group of "convertible Catholics," which represent 8.1% of the electorate.

The new polls did not indicate what prompted the shift but in general conservative Catholics have been strong supporters of President Bush's policies on terrorism and abortion. It's less clear why Bush seems to be doing so well among centrist Catholics, who tend to be more liberal on social issues and even tend to be pro-choice on abortion.

Kerry has been far more reluctant to discuss his faith than Bush has, a tendency that aides attribute to a Northeast Catholic cultural aversion to public explications of religion. He and other speakers did speak openly about his faith during the Democratic convention but has shifted back more recently to his pre-convention tendency to avoid the topic.

DID anyone see the vid shots of Kerry in that black church looking like a bobble head? He looked like the worlds biggest dork. And what was with the granite face shot of JJ? guess he doesn't like being that close to Rev Al

He can't even get an invitation to speak at Knights of Columbus, they invited the Methodist, Bush. Bush has a theology closer to authentic Catholicism that Kerry a CINO does.

This poll trend is a surprise?

CONTACT YOUR DIOCESE AND MAIL THE OPEN LETTER
Dioceses By State

The John Kerry for President Web site proclaims that Senator Kerry “will only nominate individuals to the federal bench whose records demonstrate ... the right to choose”. Removing political correctness from that statement, Senator Kerry, you have announced that you will only support people to the Federal Judiciary who support killing unborn children. Yet, the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops mandates that:

“the killing of an unborn child is always
intrinsically evil and can never be justified”

. . . and that those “who formulate laws . . .
have an obligation in conscience to work toward
correcting morally defective laws, lest they be
guilty of cooperating in evil and in sinning
against the common good”.

Senator Kerry, two of the most capable lawyers that we know — who are also Catholics faithful to the Bishops’ pro-life mandate — are Harvard Law Professor Mary Ann Glendon and noted attorney Philip Moran. Your litmus test would bar these and many other highly qualified people from the judiciary. Why do you, Senator Kerry, have a “litmus test” for judicial candidates that discriminates against Faithful Catholics?

This letter is not on behalf of or in opposition to your candidacy, but I am asking you to announce today that you will not impose any abortion litmus test on candidates for the Federal Judiciary ... especially those who are Faithful Catholics.

Signed,

Raymond Flynn

yesterday he went to a Haitian Catholic Church in FL in addition to going to the AME Baptist church with Jackson and Sharpton ... but not otherwise that I've read in Catholic churches .. remember, several bishops around the country have refused to give him Communion .. his going to RC churches generally is not a good thing.

Kerry Catholicism is right down there with Kennedy's,
Dashole's, Leahy's, Biden's, ad nauseum.

Something about all of these internals just isn't adding up for me.

If the polls are to be believed, we have an almost tied race. Yet time after time, we are seeing groups that went for Gore last time, either very weak for Kerry, or leaning towards Bush.

We have seen, Catholics, Women, Blacks (still very strong for Kerry, but not as enthusiastic as for Gore), Hispanics, Jews, Youth, etc.

The only polls I have seen that Kerry has improved on is the Muslims. It would be very interesting to get some of these figures in a chart and compare them to 2000. If Bush is truly improving in these demographics, without losing any of his base, this election should be a blowout.

Dales, I am pinging you because you have all of the figures at your fingertips, have you looked into this at all?

When you look at all the demographics from the polls, it doesn't look good for Kerry. He is getting less of the normal dem breakdowns in almost all categories. So how is he doing so well in all the general and national polls? I still think it could be a blowout for Bush. But then again, all the polls are so mixed. Most show Bush up, but then today, polls like Zogby show Kerry up 3. Who is right?

The support for Nader is well down, and I have seen evidence that the left that occasionally or usually sits out or votes 3rd party is with the Democrats. Combine them with the Muslim vote, and it does not surprise me to see a net wash.

Could the first Catholic presidential nominee since 1960 lose the election because of the Catholic vote?

We can all pray very hard for this outcome!

He should keep his big foot out of his even bigger Botoxed mouth.

Oh I hope he DOES make a big speech, and get pounded about it in the Catholic press. Maybe not assailed by the elitist pundits, but by regular Catholics who are SICK of panderers like Kerry who want nothing to do with their faith until they're running for office.

I agree. When I heard about this appearance via the radio today, my first thought was 'the last time I checked, Catholics are required to attend Mass on Sunday. Why wasn't he seen in a Catholic Church?' (And my answer to myself was 'because he fears being denied the Eucharist by the bishop or the priest.')

ATTENTION: Pennsylvania Catholics: The PA Catholic Conference of Bishops has a Bush/Kerry Voters guide. And it's definitely usable. It does have vouchers, healthcare and the death penalty, but it doesn't cut Kerry any slack in these areas either! Print it out, make copies, and get it stuffed into your bulletin.

It's got approval from your bishop.

Thanks, it will be interesting to see if these lefties actually vote, or if there numbers are concentrated in States that Kerry would win any way. With the exception of Michigan with the Muslims, aren't most of these votes in major metropolitan areas? Wisconsin, which had a huge Nader vote (and a Buchanan vote that was higher than the margin of Gores win), seems to have Bush in the lead.
